it is so simple, just a subtle shift in our thinking and two major problems could be controlled - global warming and fossil fuel shortages:

The most that would be lost is a shallow need for speed, which is akin to a teenaged thrill-ride , would be lost for some drivers, maybe 3 extra minutes on the road on the way to work.
What we gain is stable climate, like we've enjoyed for the past while. Unstable climate created by unnatural forces [mankind] isn't prdictable, it could be really bad or it could be like this now... [rising seas hurricanes, weird temperatures that kill crops and so on].
I, for one, have a consciousness that is "expansive enough" to see that this - lowering hp to 100, is the right thing to do.
