Your #1 problem here is weather! The moisture would be soaked into the soil and increase the weight at the rooftop by tons. So you would have to use more materials, stronger materials and then you might have to face shorter and stouter (not mention much more expensive) buildings. Then you would have the pest infestation problems as well as health violations due to insects that carry virus' and the accompanying bird's and other bug eating predator's. So yeah! Great idea! This is a reply to # 498,593I believe shes talking about elevated boxed garden beds or potted plant with good drainage! Although sod roofs with a drainage type system are nothing new! The dutch use minature greenhouses on thier roofs slightlty elevated ! Where theres a will there is a way!

Agreed, but still I think the pest problem is still very serious considering the recent out breaks that sre rounding the Globe. Also, We have been experiencing some really dangerous wheather lately and we may wind up with having to change our drainage systems if more and more people fill the rooftops with Gardens. I just had an Idea. How about Building bridgework garden's between the building rooftops and that way you can decrease your pest problem, alleviate roof drainage overload, answer the structure overload and the only problem left is pesticide control.

MoreThis is a reply to # 498,603are you saying that with the cube houses there would be an increase..i just dont see how having grass on the top of your house as opposed to underneath and all around would increase any pest problem which we are dealing with in the traditional houses most of us live in..

And do you invision everone living in those little cubes!lol Cities are totaly dependent on crop lands ! If real estate developers and industry destroys enough crop land or a natural or manmade disaster accures all the roof top in the world wouldnt make a differance!

Remember first that bugs are a food source for many animal's, secound, That bugs pretty much go wherever they please and pretty much have the Earth covered with their kind. And they feast on flowers, herb's, vegetables and just any source of plant life that exist's. That includes poisonous plants. The more vegetation that exists in any one area will bring in kind a hundred score of bug's. And with her vision of all the building rooftop's with Those small garden's, it might as well as be a bumper crop for the bug's, bird's and vermin. This is a reply to # 498,611If your lost then try this. The more plants laying exposed to the elements, the more bugs wiil be attracted to the source in the city. The bugs carry virus'. The bird's who come to eat the bug's also carry virus'. The vermin who will breed after feasting on the bug's carry virus'. As all these animal's mix in the city, teeming with people, and the rise in all those populations, and all those virus' will find more and more sources of multipling and more and more people will become sick. Remember the "Black Plague"? Those are the very same conditions that would exist under those conditions.

This is a reply to # 498,612why do you change between your name and number ??????hmmm ..anyways..once again i ask how having vegatation is any worse then the current traditional houses and apartments..besides, its not like these insects are the disease spreaders you say they are...how many times have you gotten the flu or a cold from a bug anyways..people spread more disease then anything..the bugs probalby dont like us to much..you dont like birds either..wow..birds eat bugs:) you should love them..do you propose we wipe out bugs, rodents, and birds..come on..what are you saying lonethought????
