Am I allergic to my house?

My son and I started coughing cronically about a couple of months ago. We bought a house that was 14 years old and totally renovated it. Removed all carpet, tile, etc. There was a bedroom closet that had mold in the ceiling due to a leaky roof. We had the roof fixed, cut the drywall out with the mold and replaced it. We have been given steroids and Antibiotics but the cough just comes back. I'm starting to get really scared that we are allergic to the house. I don't know what to do. Everyone says we should be allergy tested and get on medication. Does anyone have any advice? I just don't know where to begin. Interestingly, my husband and other two sons are fine.

MoreThis is a reply to # 48,136Did you put carpet in the house? What about new cabinets. Your family might have stronger immune systems and because of that there bodies are able to fight the chemicals in the air

Take a look at this link. I am well aware of this. After reading this get back to me. Also reply notification down below so you know I replied. In the meantime open your windows for proper ventilation. Please look into Antibiotics and steroids, they generally change the intestinal flora and kill off plenty of good bacteria resulting in.........Your own house might not be safe for you at this time. You might not need the Sherry Rogers mold kit. There are other things in there that are affecting you.

This is a reply to # 48,138Get down on your hands and knees and take a few whiffs of that carpeting. You do know the newer carpetings have formaldehyde. So they have to outgas. And it can take up to a year. Ask your son too also.

This is a reply to # 48,136Your new items, carpeting etc..., contain chemicals that are harmful. You need to air out the house. You might also find cleaners that are friendly to disinfect what you can. Shampoo the carpet. Good Luck

I'm allergic to molds, my count is 98 higher than an average person. The problem is unless you wash everything the mold spores just circulate, hoovering is a nightmare.
Try washing your household with vineagar on the walls, windows, furniture, everything. As soon as it dries the smell will go away. There's also a mold test kit on the market if you do a search on google one should crop up. Air filters are also quiet good.

So I take it you and your son both feel better when you're not in your home? That's usually a pretty good indication that your have a sick home. You replaced all your carpeting in your house or just some? Could that new carpeting be outgassing and causing your coughing? Because I have allergies to molds plus chemical sensitivities.
You might look around the house for anything new you bought just before you started coughing. Because the fabrics these days have terrible odors that cannot be washed out. Just a thought. - Re: Am I allergic to my house? #66105
