Hi there,
I tried Pro Activ last year for a few months, and although it did clear my skin a little, it left my face very red and very irrated!!
After doing a lot of research I developed my own (less expensive)
Acne prevention program - and it's working pretty well after a month and a half!!
The Pro Activ cleanser is supposed to get deep down in your pores with the benzoyl peroxide and exfoliate your skin with the grainy "scrubbies".
But I read that the benzoyl peroxide doesn't do anything because it's only on your skin for a minute or two. I also found out that grainy ingredients that are meant to exfoliate can actually spread infrection to other unaffected areas of your face.
So what I use now (and it works really well!) is Spectro Jel cleanser. It doesn't irritate my sensitive skin and it exfoliates gently, but effectively without the use of harsh chemicals, or abrasive "scrubbies". As a bonus it's really inexpensive- a huge $10 bottle can last a couple of months!!
I found that the glycolic toner really made my skin sting - and made it very red for the rest of the day.
So instead I found a gentler acid to exfoliate my skin - it's called lactic acid. I use Philosophy's "The Afterglow" as a toner.
It's amazing if your skin is at all sensitive - and it leaves skin feeling so soft!! It's a little more expensive - but you only need a tiny bit so it lasts awhile.
And finally for a benzoyl peroxide product I started out using the Neutrogena product with 2.5% - and it worked really well for a couple of weeks. But then I found I started breaking out again so I bought Panoxyl Aqua Gel with 5 % benzoyl peroxide - it actually really gentle considering it's a higher percentage.
Once a week I use the Queen St.Helene's Mint Julep mask - it is heaven sent!!
And that's it - my skin has been the clearest it has been in a few years!!
I also read that chemical peels are really great for helping with exfoliation - so I am going to try a lactic acid peel once a week.
It's also very important to use sunscreen every day!!! I use Neutrogena Healthy skin - it's a moisturiser (which acneic skin really needs so that it doesn't keep over producing oil) and it has SPF 15 in it too!!
Just a warning - the first week or two my skin was really dry and peeling like crazy. But now that it's so well exfoliated it doesn't peel anymore - and not only is it clear my skin is so bright and not red anymore!!
I've also been experimenting with different cleanses - and they along with a Candida diet have helped so much - and I feel so much better now!!
Anyways, I apologize for such a long post - good luck with everything!!!
