I'm sure they could use EFAs. Hemp seeds would be easy to put into their homemade food (one cat refused food if it has any oil in it -- but he's eat a tablespoon of ghee is two days, go figure). I thought I'd post here since there are plenty of smart pet people here -- and some of them share their names with cats!

This is a reply to # 380,967According to a Discovery channel documentary, which of course I HAD to watch being a cat lover, :) cats eat protein and can only assimilate animal protein. PUre carnivores. OF course animal protein has fats and that's how they get them. So I would hesitate to give them a fat that came from a vegetable.
I had a cat who lived 21 years. They were problem-free until the last two years. She only ate Purina Cat Chow altho now I'm rather against commercial cat foods, and of course we gave her plenty of fresh chicken, shrimp and steak. :) Her coat stayed lovely until those last two years when her kidneys and such started to fail.
So if you're going to supplement your cat's diet, buy a couple ounces of filet mingon or a couple extra shrimp. I'm sure he will absolutely LUV you for that! :)

To let you know what goes with us: My cats sometimes behave like "little vegetarians". They love salad and *ADORE* (as in go mad as soon as they smell it)steamed asparagus. A student of the late Hanna Kroger suggested I give them asparagus -- all her cats eat it, and it's good for their water works and a great thing to kill off fungus.
They get raw organic turkey, btw, as a staple.
My thought has always been that in the wild they would eat the gut of their kill, and that would have grains and vegetables in it. Also, I've seen outdoor cats eating green tops in the garden. So, there seems to be a natural appetite for it.
That said -- here's a funny story from just this morning: I put out about a tablespoon of catnip on a sheet of newspaper. I figured the cats could enjoy that all day. Well, my little guy went over and *Hoovered* the whole thing up. Then he went over the my chair, snuggled under the throw and fell very deeply asleep. We were (quietly, so as not to disturb the baby) LOLing!!
No, he does not have a hangover.

This is a reply to # 380,975That's an EXcellent point about cats eating the gut! They would get lots of fat that way too. Naturalist Farley Mowat who wrote "Never Cry Wolf" which was made into a movie ate nothing but mice to prove that wolves could live off mice. He started out by gutting the mice but got cravings for fat, so kept the guts in his diet. Poor man! But he found he could live just fine off nothing but wild mice!
I always thought that show phrased it a bit extreme since cats will eat grass and they know best. I think when they are low in certain minerals they go for veggies. I had a cat that loved canteloupe seeds. :)

This is a reply to # 380,978I'll have to try the cantaloupe seeds. I *have* heard about cats eating the fruit. To me cantaloupe is very, very distantly liver-like, perhaps it's all the Vitamin A.
