I understand that you are concerned about "switching one addiction for another". Believe me, I do.
At first, before I even knew about Bup, all that I knew about was Methadone and I was totally opposed to that. But my son was only on Bup for 4 wks of maintenance and a another week for tapering off. So far, so good.
I feel that the key to this is being on as low a dose as possible. My son was on 8mg and that worked fine for him.
I was hesitant for him to be on it, because I know that it's an opiate just like the rest of it. But the addition of the naltrexone in it TRULY took away the cravings for the heroin.
That, in itself, has been a blessing.
My son was getting desperate because he WANTED to quit. He tried SO many times to go "cold turkey" and always relapsed. Any kind of opiate is like a DEVIL getting hold of you. He just won't let go!
I wish you all the best.
