One of the best ways to distinguish if the amount on a supplement is based on the whole Mg salt content or elemental content of Mg is in the phrasing:
Whole Mg salt(such as citrate, malate, oxide, etc) content:
Magnesium Citrate .......... 200mg
or
Magnesium ('as' Magnesium Citrate) ...... 200mg
Elemental Mg content:
Magnesium('from' Magnesium Citrate) ..... 200mg
or
Magnesium(Magnesium Citrate) ....... 200mg (This form can also be used for salts)
Some bottles will actually state 'elemental' magnesium, but this is quite rare. If in doubt, try to contact the manufacturer. They will be able to clarify what the value on the bottle truly represents.
Now Foods is pretty good about using the as/from forms to distinguish salt from elemental. I haven't found another brand that is as clear on a consistent basis, but I'm sure there must be more.
