Hello!!! I also posted this in the "alternative sinus" forum, but since I believe my problem is fungus-related, I decided to post here to get some feedback.
Basically, my girlfriend complains of a "toasty", dusty, musty smell coming from my nose... I have years of experience with sinus infections, and the smell is always at its worst when I get an infection, but sometimes the smell comes around even when I don't have symptoms.. which I really don't have much anymore..... After using the Grossan irrigator daily for a few months, I have found that not only have my sinus problems diminished to only rare, minor flare-ups, my sense of smell has improved GREATLY, and I believe that I have now smelled this "burning" smell for the very first time... To me it smells like a furnace when it's turned on for the first time of the season, but also like an old, dusty, musty couch.... Does anybody have experience with this phenomena? Some people describe it as smelling like there's a cigarette burning in the room when there is none... Like I said, I have been using the Grossan irrigator for several weeks, and when my symptoms flare up, I put some Grapefruit-Seed-Extract drops in the saline mix and the yellow mucus and congestion all but disappear, but the smell remains!!! It might be a food allergy , but I think its an auto-immune response to fungus or a fungal infection itself... I have had a bout with candida in the past, but I really don't have symptoms from that anymore... Any shared experience or opinions on this would be greatly appreciated...

a guy that was working on a house we lived in....
i remeber him telling me something about a mold or fungal infection he had in his sinuses after being exposed to mold at the workplace. i wish i could give you more details but i can only remember he complained of constant stuff nose,headaches and nausea before he finally went to have it checked out.- Re: smoky, dusty, musty odor - pleas... MoreThis is a reply to # 297,469Well!! Thanks for responding!! I was wondering if anyone would! Ha! I left out a few details in my original post, tho.... I had FESS (functional endoscopic sinus surgery) almost two years ago... That REALLY helped my sinus situation, as I have bad "plumbing" genetically, in that my sinus openings (ostium) were unusually small, and my sinus cavities were unusually large... I also had cysts and polyps removed and my deviated septum repaired... Sounds like a lot, eh?? Ha! It was!!! I assure you, however, that the surgery has been a WONDERFUL thing for me... I can breathe better than ever, and also I can now basically irrigate any pending infection out before it can take hold of me... But the reality is that despite the fact that my ENT is a WONDERFUL doctor (who has a fairly open mind for a western doc), neither he nor my regular physician (a holistic doctor who believes in homeopathic medicine and who heloed me conquer candidiasis) can pinpoint this odor issue... BTW -- it is NOT related to oral hygeine... It comes from my NOSE...
After trying everything... and I mean EVERYTHING to fix this musty/smoky odor thing, I have decided that my problem IS fungus or mold-related, and so I started on a round of diflucan to see if I can abate this thing once and for all... or at least definitively identify the source/cause of it...
In other words, I already HAVE "checked it out", per se... I'm merely looking for somebody... ANYBODY... who has experienced this malady... Funny, but I found another thread of people who have experienced this smoky odor thing, and I was the last person to post there, but none of our pleas have been answered, either!! Here's the link!! Anyway, thanks for your suggestion.... Hopefully someday somebody will respond and say, "Oh, yeah!! I had that!! I did 'such-and-such' and it went away"!!!!! Sure... I know... Wishful thinking... Nobody is the same... There are too many variables... Meanwhile, I'm gonna continue to fight this candida bug til I die... Ha!

This is a reply to # 297,471have you ever looked into using a "neti-pot" to help cleanse your sinus and nose?
i havent used them but on another message board people that have really bad allergies and sinus problems swear by them.
something to check out anyway. i dont think they are $$$ or anything.

The neti pot just don't cut it... ha! Believe me when I said that I've tried EVERYTHING.... I still think it's a fungus thing... an auto-immune reaction to fungus or mold... But we'll see!! Thanks anyway, tho!
