Sometimes I am given the chance to witness some thing or other that is very unique. Last Wednesday there was such an occasion. The kind of event that you witness and you wish everyone could see and share with you, but you feel like it was for your observation only. I have read (and studied) Carols Casteneda's works and Don Juan repeatedly stated that lots of the things Carlos saw was for Cartlos's observation only. It was that kind of feeling. Just thought I would pass it along.
The place where I work has inside dining facilities, but being a lover of the out-of-doors, I chose to eat ouside on this day. Typical March day. Kite-flying weather. Gusty wind. Cloudless sky. I spotted a hawk flying. Soaring actually. Normally hawks flap their wings. Not this one. He looked like a miniature hang glider. He would dive like a dive bomber, then curve upwards and catch an up-draft thermal and would go up with no effort to him. He would get very high and ease out of the thermal and soar and coast and then dive some more. The epitome of pure joy. Not once flapping his wings. Just using whatever was available at the moment at the particular place he was at the moment.
I was so captivated with the scene that I forgot to eat. I watched him soaring for over 15 minutes. Until he got out of sight. The hawk was simply enjoying the moment with sheer ecstasy. On one hand I envied the hawk, while on the other I was thankful that I was allowed to watch the spectacle. I mentally thanked the hawk and since then I have thought a lot about the enjoying what is here and now. I already do a lot of the "in the moment" thing, but do get away from it on occasion and the hawk reminded me to get back to what works best for me.
