Sebaceous
These glands produce sebum, an oily substance that also contains waxes and lipids. Sebaceous glands are embedded in the dermis over most of the body. They are more concentrated in the scalp, face and forehead. They are not found in the palms or soles.
Sebaceous glands begin to function at puberty, when the male and female reproductive hormones kick in. Sebum may have weak antibacterial and antifungal properties. Disruption in the normal, continuous flow of sebum is one of the causes of acne.
Acne is an inflammation of obstructed sebaceous glands.
