I've never used NT, but it's probably basically the same (in operation) as Windows 98 and XP. DOS is the forerunner of Windows. DOS was the main operating system in I.B.M. personal computers before Windows was even thought of and is still used in order to allow Windows to work (DOS must be loaded onto a computer hard drive before Windows, Windows will not work alone). Even though Microsoft brags that Windows XP does not need DOS, XP still has elements of DOS built into it. So, without getting any more technical, that (DOS) is the KERNEL. The way things are going today (with all of the spyware scams and advertising messages used to lure people into allowing viruses onto their computer), there's a good chances that you are receiving a phony message meant to encourage you (just like everybody else in the world, you will receive an e-mail telling you to do so) to go to a 'PC scan' website that will automatically download some spyware onto your computer.
Whatever your firewall, anti-virus software or anti-spyware didn't stop, you could probably track down by going RESTARTing IN MS-DOS MODE (remember, Windows NT most likely has minor differences, but probably is basically the same). In Windows 98, there are two ways to go into DOS, but the only right way is by choosing RESTART in M-S DOS MODE because then you will have the ability to delete any of the rogue (infectious or harmful) files that Windows uses. When you restart in DOS mode, you will see a DOS prompt that will show that you are in the Windows directory of the hard drive. In DOS, the word TYPE is a command, so I'll use the word PRESS when explaining what to do on the keyboard.
Since it can be a long explanation, first read my posts underneath this one on the forum, familiarize yourself with DOS (assuming I explained at least part of it decently), and post again so that I can explain everything that I didn't explain well the first time (don't delete ANYTHING without first copying the file onto a floppy disk marked GARBAGE (just in case you delete the wrong file). DOS should be easy to navigate IF I managed to explain it well in my other posts, but for a good start, you should see this prompt after you restart in DOS mode...
C:\Windows>
now press
DIR (and press enter)
you'll see all of the files and directories scroll by,...so press DIR/P
(press enter).
Anytime you want to reboot Windows, press EXIT.
The command TYPE allows you to read files written in ASCII (American society for info something) code. In order to read the config.sys file, press...
C:\Windows>type config.sys (and press enter)
If the file is only 2 or 300 bytes long, you'll be able to read it on one screen, if it is longer, you'll have to read one page at a time by pressing...
type config.sys | more (enter)
that vertical line before the word MORE just doesn't show up well on the monitor, but it's actually two dots one on top of the other, you have to press the shift key and you'll see the uppercase symbol on one of the keys of the top row (different keyboards have the keys rearranged).
This whole explanation is necessary to be able to find the files you need to delete, because, even after the virus programs delete a rogue file, spyware and viruses rebuild themselves every time you start your computer unless you hunt down everything yourself and delete it (probably in your registry too).
DON'T go to the post above written by a person called MODERATION, that is an unknown name and it sounds like someone is trying to plant spyware. It is to be suspected as one of those "PC scan" schemes until it is recognized by the moderatOR of this forum.
