Actually the term snake oil comes from an intresting story of how a travelling salesman would sell his product. I forget some of the details but there was a man who went around selling snake oil around the turn of the 19 th century. Claimed his snake oil would cure lots of so called incurable conditions such as rattle snake bites etc. Part of his selling technique was that he let a rattlesnake bite him. Well many people just as yourself thought he was a quack or a charlaton. So one day he sent the snake oil to a "medical Dr" to have it analized. Well to make a long story short the dr's wife had cancer and was cured after taking a whole box of the snake oil stuff. Later it was found out that the oil contained echineachea(sp). This snake oil was then made by the loyd's brothers who were at the time the formost makers of herbal remedies(I believe under a new name) and their book still exists today of so called snake oil cures.
