Today I heard from the Director of Magnesium Research Lab, who is a diabetic with peripheral neuropathy, that he was able to reverse the neuropathy and nerve degeneration with a year of using oral magnesium preparations. A heavy dose, and too many pills/day. 36 pills every 4 hours. But this is important information. It shows magnesium can and does help with peripheral neuropathy!!! I have also heard from another woman who suffers from severe peripheral neuropathy from the disease ME, Myalgic Encephamylitis, who now can "feel the sheets" on her feet after using magnesium oil. (no pills)
Magnesium is known to be deficient in over 68% of the US population, and moreso in diabetics who waste magnesium more than others when blood sugars are out of control. Magnesium is crucial to over 300 enzyme reactions in our bodies.
More and more research is coming out on the importance of magnesium for diabetics, as well as for the entire population.
Magnesium is found to be very low in diabetics and also in those with retinopathy and neuropathy and levels must be raised. Oral preparations will help, but take too long to bring the body's levels to adequate amounts and are often not well absorbed from the intestines. Children labeled "pre diabetic" are in great need of magnesium, which has been linked to preventing the developement of type 2 diabetes. With the added insult of BOTH types of diabetes, called "double diabetes" being found more and more, and the evidence that magnesium will decrease insulin resistance....we all need to be supplementing with appropriate magnesium. It is deficient in our soils and foods. Type one diabetics developing insulin resistance (like type 2) is a double whammy leading those of us into the complications of diabetes at a more rapid rate. Diabetes is still the number one cause of Blindness, amputation and even ESRD (end stage renal disease)
Diabetes is now estimated to be affecting 20 million US residents, and incidence in children is rising rapidly. This is up from 18 billion in 2002! (ADA info) Doctors are reporting alarm at the raising incidence of diabetes they are seeing in children, and estimate that complications will occur at an earlier age than we are seeing now. Both types of diabetes risk the very same complications. Both types of diabetics need to pay attention to magnesium levels, and most doctors do not test us for this deficiency. Serum levels do not always show the whole picture!
I am a type one diabetic using magnesium oil, magnesium chloride.....a natural form of magnesium from evaporated sea water....no pharmaceutical preparations needed. My blood pressure is in better control, taking some of the burden off my kidneys, and there have been other benefits as well. I also use Spirulina and with these two I have found my blood sugars to stop swinging around so much, to be better stabilized. This oil is not really an oil, though it has a slightly oily consistency. I use it in baths and can testify to its effectiveness and strength. I use it to spray on myself every day as well.......so I invite you to got to the new site of MagnesiumForLife at: http://www.magnesiumforlife.com/ and learn about the many benefits to magnesium chloride and magnesium oil......a faster and safe way to increase diabetics magnesium levels and for all of those we love. It is beneficial in so many ways and for so many conditions. Pain relief, natural calcium channel blocker (for hypertension) a natural statin (for cholesterol lowering), decreases insulin resistance, improves carbohydrate metabolism....and on and on and on! The only cautions to heed are that it does lower blood pressure, and if you are already low, be careful....and most importantly, if you have severe renal insufficiency you can develope toxicity. Know your renal status first and be careful with concomitant use of other magnesium products. Talk this over with your physician, and show him the information. More will be coming regarding diabetes and magnesium on this site.

Glipizide (Glucotrol®) and Glyburide (Micronase, Glynase, Diabeta).
Taking magnesium and and either Glipizide or Glyburide together may further lower blood sugar leading to blurred vision, tremor (shaking), hunger, sweating, headache, skipped heart beats, confusion, nervousness and extreme tiredness. Magnesium ( also commonly found in antacids), may increase the absorption of glipizide and glyburide, medications used to control blood sugar levels. Ultimately, this may prove to allow for reduction in the dosage of those medications. http://www.umm.edu/altmed/ConsSupplements/Interactions/Magnesiumcs....
.
if you choose to supplement with magnesium products of any kind, be mindful of the above, and check blood sugars often!!
