Your post, and the link's discussion of our inner ear, again make me consider the cause of four years of Morgellons tinnitus, that worked like clockwork. Every single time I laid to bed, and even worse when I got up in the morning, 20 minutes of screaming tinnitus followed. Standing up to leave the bathtub was another guarantee of both intense vertigo and tinnitus.
"Equilibrium organs are called statocysts. They contain statoliths (stones) made with dense material such as calcium or magnesium salts crystals which are in contact with specialized cells." My favorite Morg medications, after fenbendazole, are
Epsom Salt baths and organic milk. Is the Morganism depleting us of calcium and mg?
"An experiment using shrimp, replaced their normal sand statocyst with metal filings." The Morg sufferer currently posting the most bizarre artifact images in my FB groups is an accident victim who uses prosthetics and is chocked full of metal pins. Metal fillings have been a major suspect in Morg discussions from the beginning.

A hijacked Morg hair eventually morphs into a structure with a shiny black orb where the hair root used to be. Could it be a statolith?:

Finally, I repeat that I'm certain that most hypotheses around PATM cannot explain the nearly instantaneous initiation of itching between two people, that I have seen thousands of times. It could be quorum sensing between like organisms, in which case I could be confident that nearly 100% of the population is infected. But that doesn't seem overly probable.
Clew offers another idea that fits my observations - nematocysts. These are certainly fast enough, and could theoretically pierce layers of clothing. Penitrant, glutitant, and volvent all seem plausible. They hunt by releasing a hypnotoxin. That word makes me think of the 5 second nitrous-balloon-like sensation that follows a good Morg itch/release.
