Before we go any further on why people may be "tormented" in hell, perhaps we want to make sure we are on the same page (or not) on whether flesh and blood can stand before God during the white throne of judgement. Does scripture say where the white throne of judgement will be? Do we just assume it's in heaven? If you can answer me these questions perhaps there will be a little less confusion. For if the dead are resurrected to stand before the throne of God, will they be in recreated flesh once again or will they be in some form of spirit?"

I really don't see why this has to be answered before we can discuss whether hell is a place of everlasting torment for the unsaved or not?

I looked up many scriptures and could not find anything that really answered your question.

Of course we all know this scripture:

Revelation 20:11-15
Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

I guess I just think of this like Jesus raising Lazarus, and I'm sure Lazarus had his flesh and everything. Whether someone has been dead three days or five hundred years, does it really make a difference in how God can raise them up in their flesh?

I think the biggest question to start with, is are the unsaved given immortality, and where does it say this?

Would this scripture even make sense at all if everyone was given immortality, whether saved or unsaved.

1 Corinthians 15:51-58

Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” ...

Paul was talking to believers there, not the unsaved as we see with the following verses:

56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

58 Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

And why must we be given an imperishable body? Because the other one, the only one the unsaved will ever have, is perishable (hence why we have scripture after scripture saying the unsaved will perish!).

And what about this one:
1 Timothy 6:16:
16who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.

God alone has immortality, and do you think he gives that to those that are not his?

There are so many more immortality scriptures we can look at and there is not one that I know of that is talking about the unsaved having it.

Instead we have warnings like this:

Matthew 10:28
And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

Because that's exactly what he's going to do with the unsaved. He's going to kill both the body and the soul in hell, meaning they don't have an immortal soul like the false doctrine of hell, believed by the majority of christians, teaches.

But is that what the scriptures teach? Does everyone possess an eternal, immortal soul?
