Hello!
This message is for everyone on the Master-Cleanse who fears (or knows) they drink too much. One of my primary objectives for going on the fast was to deal with my cravings for alcohol. While I don't believe I am an alcoholic, I know that I am an alcohol abuser. I have been drinking a bottle of wine every night for many years. Recently, I started drinking more like a bottle and a half (and sometimes 2) each night. I really got concerned, but seemed unable to stop. I am also a real serious Sugar addict and, at the start of the fast, about 75 pounds overweight.
As of today, day 24 on the fast, I can not believe how great it feels to be free of the craving for alcohol. It's gone. Totally and completely gone. I had a truly hellacious day today and, prior to the fast, would have been consoling myself all day long with thoughts of the bottle(s) of wine I would be picking up for tonight. Instead, I focused on the hot bath I would take tonight and the good book that would go in there with me. And that was enough. This is just a huge, huge relief to me.
While I am certainly not craving sweets, they still look good to me. I want to stay on the Master-Cleanse until this changes as well. I really want to be free from all of these cravings and I want to feel like I have more power over the decisions I make.
When I first started the Master-Cleanse I asked if anyone knew how effective it was for addressing cravings and addictions. It didn't appear that many people had experience in this domain. For this reason, I want to share my experiece with everyone who is struggling like I was. I am completely convinced at this point in time that whatever it was that was creating my cravings for alcohol, it was defintely chemical. Now that my physiology is undergoing some pretty serious change, the cravings are gone.
So, for everyone looking to let go of a particulary bad habit, I think that the MC is a really spectacular start. I know that when I go back to eating and engaging in normal social functions, there will be challenges to face, but at least I won't be fighting my own cravings.
If you're like me--take heart--this really, really works!

MoreThis is a reply to # 227,846Thank you very much for your post. I have a family member who is a bad alcoholic who has recently hit rock bottom and is trying to quit. I have one reservation about the Master-Cleanse for her, she is very skinny now. If it helps her beat her addiction then al is well, but she is very skinny and I am scared the weightloss might be very bad. Any thoughts. Also what type of detox symptoms did you experience? All the info you can give would help alot.

I don't really know what to say about the weight loss issue. As I wrote in my post, I started out 25 days ago 75 pounds overweight. I have now lost 22 pounds, but have lost nothing at all in the past 5 days. I don't know why this is, but am trusting that my body knows what it is doing. Pepe has posted that he fasted once (I think) 40 days and lost just 20 pounds. I think that it is possible that if your relative is underweight then perhaps she wouldn't lose too much. I suspect that she may have to increase the number of MCs she has per day, or else increase the syrup in each glass, as that's where all the calories are (50 cal/Tbsp). However, given that this is my first fast, I am not the best person to hand out specific advice for someone with a grave illness.
My detox symptoms were very mild compared to some that I've heard about: low-grade headache for a couple of days, currently tons of phlegm that I am coughing up (I've read that that is a symptom of your lymphatic system clearing up), and some rather annoying leg pain at night. Other than that, it's been very clear sailing. On a very positive note: my craving for alcohol was gone by day 7. If I had quit then, I would still have been ahead.
Best of luck to both you and your relative. This was the best decision I could have made. And, if she is ready to quit, perhaps it is for her too.

It is major freedom for me from the life long complusion of overeating.. I, too at about day 18 walked through a bakery and smelled the cakes etc.. and they did not smell good, they smelled like non-food ... and I have only a couple samples since. Entenmann's and Haagen Daz used to be daily fare for me.. not any longer...
By doing the two MCs, I am able to see me becoming a raw foodie... an impossibility before.
There is freedom in doing this cleanse.
After the cleanse is the very best part!!

This is a reply to # 227,855It IS a great freedom, isn't it? The freedom I am currently experiencing is freedom from having to think about food, to plan meals, to shop, to cook, and to make choices. I know that this is a pretty unreal condition and can't last forever, but for the present time, I have peace; I am not at war with myself over food. However, as I mentioned in my post, sweets still look good to me and I am not at the place where you are today. When vegetables look better to me than cookies, I will know that I have conquered my other addiction. So . . . I carry on . . . and hope to some day be where you are!

This is a reply to # 227,846I'm right with you on the "wine" subject. I drank, as you, at home every evening but once I went on the cleanse I didn't miss it at all. I'm very lucky that I never did have a "sweet tooth" so didn't have to overcome that problem. My problem is the tobacco. On my next cleanse, hopefully, that will go too. Imagine what it would feel like to be addiction-free!! That is such a great goal--no addictions at all. I can't really even imagine that kind of life because I have been addicted to SOMETHING all my life. While I know there is something called the addictive personality (and I have it), as a result of this cleanse, I believe 100% that it is also chemical. What else explains the complete loss of desire for alcohol in less than a month? Good luck on the tobacco front. One demon down, one to go.

This is a reply to # 227,846I can relate to your post 100%. I have used The Master Cleanse on more than 5 occassions to get my alcohol abuse in check. I am looking to rid myself of my dependancy completely. I also turn to a bottle or a two of wine in the evenings and look forward to winding down to a little more than a glass of wine when I get home.
I have started The Master Cleanse today after being in the hospital for 3 days with some unknown stomach illness that was confused with appendicitis and then some other stomach ailment. The hospital put me on a liquid diet and I decided if I were going to do liquids I might as well do the cleanse again. I have been meaning to do it again with hopes for a more permanent cure as opposed to a temp. treatment of my alcohol abuse.
I haven't heard many speak of the EXACT same situation that I have but I have seen posts about drug use and ciggerettes. I am so happy you have brought this topic up. I am looking foward to this fast.
I haven't been drinking for 5 days and I feel GREAT. I don't even know why I do it, in my case it is chemical in part and social, lets just say it is really hard for an alcohol abuser to work in a bar... But I know it can be done, as that is my trade for the moment until I am finished with school.
You will also notice that once you give up drinking the other 50 pounds will melt away, just think you are consuming a minimum of 600 empty calories a day...
Keep it up and once you reach your goal be thankful and continue to stay focused/ I am not sure what makes us want to go back to drinking or makes me want to go back to drinking when I feel SO MUCH better when I don't...

This is a reply to # 227,861And good luck to you too! It sounds like you have a double motivation to fast--your health and your dependency.
I'm curious to know this--after your previous fasts, what was it like to go back to drinking? Did you start back at the same level you were at before the fast or did it take a while to get back there? How did it taste?
Right now, I'm actually afraid to drink again. I have no confidence that I would actually have any more control over my drinking than I did previously. For this reason, I want to just avoid drinking all together until I have really dealt with the emotional reasons for overindulging. I'm thinking now that if I can successfully learn to deal with the ups and downs of life without alcohol then perhaps, at some time in the future, it will cease to be a drug for me . . .
Report back with your progress? It's great to know that I'm not alone in this.

This is a reply to # 227,870I work in a bar setting and I have a VERY social lifestyle. Usually it just starts socially and the first drink feels almost like the first drink you ever had, it really hits you hard and you can feel the effectes within the first few sips... And from that point your body kind of just ajusts and in a day or so its back to its regular tolerance. It is rather strange. I am going to try to take my time and stay away, I know there are some dependancy issues because I just don't know how to have a glass or two and leave it at that. And again anything would upset me and I would be looking for the booze escape. I am on day 3 and day 6 without drinking and I must admit I FEEL GREAT.Advertisement

This is a reply to # 227,861I tended bar for almost ten years, and during the first three, drank A LOT.
I don't know how it is where you are, but where i worked, it was illegal to drink behind the bar. So i stayed up until five or six in the morning drinking after i got off work (sometimes with some really sketchy individuals) and ended up wasting the whole next day, which, if i had off, i spent eating and drinking. It was damaging on about three or four obvious levels.
Then i just tapered off. Nowadays i get really into smelling and tasting my wine, and only drink it once a week or less. Working at an enoteca educated me about what to look for in a good wine and now i try to be discriminating and pair my wine with the food i'm eating. I'm a bid fan of riesling and fresh fruit for desert, for example, without drinking any during dinner. Same with liquor and beer. I guess i've become a snob, but it's been beneficial to my health to sesearch my wine and beer. I see no good reason to drink budweiser unless you want sour bubbly cool-aid. Give me an oatmeal porter though, and...i'll be drunk and full when i'm done with my first pint, lol.
I guess what i'm trying to say is that although for many people it it necessary to quit cold turkey and never take drinking up again, for me, less and better worked. Instead of drinking a six pack of Michelob, i drink a pint of India Ale. Comng back from the MC, it might be something to consider, as you are naturally craving things that are better for you, and a LITTLE wine IS good for you.

This is a reply to # 227,873I can tell you what I did when I got off and it seems to work for me and its easy for me to keep with it. I have been able to keepthe 20LBs I lost off since my first cleanse back in Sept. I was so ready to eat I started with the vegtable soup the first day. A little at first and I had no bad effects. Once I was back to eating a normal diet I tried to stay away from anything with white flour, refined Sugar and milk products. This seemed to work for me. I could eat rice and baked potatos. Thats my simple plan.

Just to put my penny's worth in as well...
I used my first Master-Cleanse to quit smoking and this one, hopefully, to quit all the smoking replacements. I've also drink waaay too much - and on my own the last couple of years. Not too good on the druggie front, either, if I'm honest. But like the above, although I'd like to kick tobacco for good, I still want to enjoy the odd glass of wine and cup of coffee - but as treats, not necessities. Otherwise, I think I'm equally liable to become an obsessive bore - as I am when I'm on a fitness-detox-health kick, when I get really anxious if I can't get to the gym even if I'm sick. I'd like to be able to say 'mmm - let's have champagne as it's a special occaision' but equally 'ah - think I'll skip the gym today cos I feel rotten'. I still want to have fun but not go mad at every slight excuse - and sometimes none at all!
Moderation moderation.... Can't be that hard, can it? I'm looking forward to it!

it's crazy b/c now it's like you're on a completely different wavelength than all your friends, loved ones, your entire social circle.... not necessarily a better wavelength, but just higher. how do you continue to participate in those wild, crazy nights like you used to with the people you love? how do you convince them that the fast changes your life WITHOUT sounding like a cult leader?
I really did not expect the Master-Cleanse to change me so drastically. It's both really great and really scary at the same time.
