It is painfully obvious that the underlying reason for their behavior, as in all similar types of behavior that crosses all ethnic, social, and political lines, is self loathing, or in their case a milder form of frustration.

They simply are not where they want to be in life. Notice we are talking about people who are 50 and 60+.

Also note there are only about 4 or 5 of them leading the pack.

These are people who were into alternative health, got into some good stuff, and then got in way over their heads, aged, and then could not look themselves in the mirror.
