I have not been on here in quite a while so thought I'd give an update as I've learned what might actually be wrong with my thyroid. I will try to make this as short as possible...I started taking
Iodine over a year ago, experienced many life changing benefits including a 15 pound weight loss in just a few months without making any other changes. I initially starting taking it for my goiter but even after a year the size or swelling never decreased whatsoever. I slowly stopped taking
Iodine a couple months ago as I wasn't sure if I should keep taking it, I in a sense gave up on it even though I had experienced so many other benefits. I got an appointment with Dr.Flechas a few weeks ago (took me 5 months to get in), he is only 2 hours from where I live so I thought this would be my last hope in figuring out my stubborn goiter. He knew immediately what was wrong with me, of course after listening to my health history, he spent a good hour with me just talking, he is incredibly knowledgable and I encourage anyone to try to see him if you're feeling helpless as I was. He thinks I have defective sodium
Iodide symporter-how he explained it to me was that the 'doorway' to my thyroid is blocked hence why
Iodine and and other supplements never helped my goiter as it couldn't reach my thyroid at least not fully. He had me get an ultrasound and also I'm doing a blood and saliva test to test for this specific disorder. Interestingly, when I had an ultrasound 5 or 6 years ago I had several nodules, my recent ultrasound I had NONE so I imagine the iodine took care of that. I go back to see him in a few weeks and we will discuss treatment which I understand is vitamin therapy and or high doses of iodine. I will keep you all posted, hope this information helps someone.
Also, since I stopped taking iodine a few months ago I have developed severe anxiety and have experienced several panic attacks which I Never had before. I have even taken a leave of absence from work because it has gotten so bad. I do think some of it might be circumstantial. Could this also be some kind if withdraw from iodine or has anyone experienced this before? I am barely functioning, just sheer panic all the time. I hope to discuss this with dr. flechas when I see him again.
Sorry for the long post, any input is appreciated.
