SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The youth chapter of the NAACP of Syracuse and Onondaga County will gather at 7:45 p.m. today in Clinton Square to protest police brutality and violence against young black men.
The Syracuse demonstration will coincide with vigils in dozens of cities across the nation tonight that were quickly organized to express sorrow and outrage over the shooting death of Michael Brown and the subsequent unrest and police crackdown in Ferguson, Mo.
Organizers are sponsoring a National Moment of Silence at 7 p.m. in many cities. Brown, an unarmed black teenager, was shot to death Saturday by a police officer in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson. The shooting sparked five nights of protests in Ferguson.
We will provide an update from the Syracuse event later tonight.

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN 6) — A protest was held in Northeast Portland by people who wanted to show their solidarity with residents of Ferguson, Missouri, on Thursday.
Organizer Jesse Sponberg posted on the #OpFerguson Facebook page the rally at 5229 NE MLK — Vanport Square — is to support people across the country who have been victims of police brutality.
As of 2:20 p.m., 237 people posted they would be attending. The organizers also want Portland Mayor Charlie Hales and Police Chief Mike Reese to denounce the actions in Ferguson.
Another vigil at Pioneer Courthouse Square will hold a moment of silence for slain, unarmed Missouri teen Mike Brown.

"We all want justice. We all want answers," the new commander, Capt. Ron Johnson of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, told The Associated Press.
When it was announced that Johnson would command law enforcement in Ferguson starting Thursday night, he said "it means a lot to me personally that we break this cycle of violence."
Ryan Reilly of The Huffington Post and Wesley Lowery of The Washington Post, who were briefly detained by officers Wednesday night, both tweeted about the contrast:

The governor of Missouri will reportedly relieve St. Louis County law enforcement from policing the ongoing demonstrations in the town of Ferguson, paving the way for possible state or federal intervention.
Rep Wm. Lacy Clay (D-Missouri told Bloomberg News on Thursday morning that Gov. Jay Nixon, also a Democrat, had confirmed to him that county police will be pulled from their duties in Ferguson, where outrage continues to erupt following the officer-involved shooting and killing of Michael Brown, an 18-year-old unarmed teenager, on Saturday.
On Wednesday evening, protests in Ferguson for the fourth straight day appeared to resemble a war zone when militarized police began firing tear gas and non-lethal ammunition into the streets towards private residences. Two journalists, one from Washington Post and another from Huffington Post, were briefly detained while on assignment.
