Lactobacteria increase the frequency, bulk, and ease of bowel movements, control gas, and reduce the bad odor of your bowels. They also suppress the growth of unfriendly bacteria and keep yeasts such as candida under control.
The easiest and richest source of supplemental lactobacteria is simply cabbage.
Cabbage feeds and promotes the growth of whatever friendly bacteria you already have in your digestive tract. It also suppresses the growth of 'bad' bacteria, controls gas, and reduces bowel odor. For therapeutic purposes, you should drink about half a cup of freshly fermented cabbage juice three times daily and also make cabbage a regular part of your diet. Drinking cabbage juice has always been a good way to heal stomach ulcers. Cabbage has always been a staple food in traditional Asian countries. Asian foods are better known for their digestibility and health promoting properties.
One of the best, cheapest, and easiest ways to get enough friendly intestinal bacteria in the digestive tract, is to make a batch of Robert Gray’s easy to prepare Cabbage Rejuvelac ferment. It is particularly important to replenish your intestinal colonies under the following conditions:
After a series of colonics
After a prolonged fast
After an intestinal cleanse
If you have a weak digestive tract
If you have chronic constipation
If you use a laxative regularly
To replenish your supply of friendly intestinal bacteria, take Rejuvelac daily for 30-45 days, longer if you wish, and repeat at least once a year. Many recipe's call for other ingredients that have to be purchased, however the original Rejuvelac, was only made with purified water and cabbage. Here’s how to make your own!
Ingredients
• 3 cups cabbage, fresh, coarsely chopped and loosely packed
• 1st Batch: 1 3/4 cups water, non-chlorinated - see note
• 2nd & Subsequent Batches: 1 1/2 cups water, nonchlorinated, plus 1/4 cup of fresh rejuvelac (from the prior Batch)
Note: Always use filtered water when making Rejuvelac because chlorine kills bacteria, even the beneficial ones!
How to Make the 1st Batch of Rejuvelac (takes 72 hours):
1. Put the cabbage and the water in the blender.
2. Start the blender at low speed and then advance the blender to high speed and blend for 10 seconds or less. Be careful not to blend it too much. It should be shredded, not liquefied.
3. Pour the blended cabbage and water into a glass jar with a tightly fitting lid (a
quart jar is excellent to use).
4. Ensure there is at least 1
inch of space above the mixture/liquid to allow room for expansion, and screw the cover on tightly.
5. Keep the jar in a place that is about room temperature for 3 days. Room temperature is about 72°F or 22°C.
6. After 3 days (72 hours) strain off the liquid rejuvelac, and save the liquid in a glass or jar, and discard the cabbage. Refrigerate rejuvelac if keeping it overnight. The cabbage can be used to make other dishes, i.e. sauerkraut, kimchi, etc. - see uses for leftover cabbage below.
7. It is the liquid that is the fresh rejuvelac, which you drink for its probiotics.
8. After straining off the fresh rejuvelac liquid make your 2nd batch of rejuvelac, which uses 1/4 cup of fresh rejuvelac from your 1st batch, as follows:
The first batch of cabbage rejuvelac takes 3 days (72 hours) to ferment, but the 2nd and all subsequent batches take only 1 day (24 hours) each.
How to Make the 2nd & Subsequent Batches of Rejuvelac (takes 24 hours)
1. Put 1 1/2 cups of purified water and 3 cups of coarsely ground, loosely packed fresh cabbage in the blender.
2. Start the blender at low speed and then advance the blender to high speed and blend for 10 seconds or less. Be careful not to blend it too much.
3. Pour the mixture into a glass jar with a tightly fitting lid and add 1/4 cup of the fresh rejuvelac. just strained off from the previous batch. Leave at least 1
inch of space above the mixture/liquid to allow room for expansion.
4. Screw the cover on tight, shake, and let it stand at room temperature until the next morning (24 hours).
5. After 24 hours strain off the liquid rejuvelac, and save it (liquid) in a glass or jar, and start your next batch.
Note: The 3 cups of cabbage and 1.75 cups of water makes one day's dose of Rejuvelac. It takes 3-4 days to ferment. So I suggest that you make batches 3 to 4 times larger than the recipe. That way, when the fermentation is over and it's time to harvest the Rejuvelac, you can make another batch of Rejuvelac on that same day which will be ready in 3-4 days when the original batch is used up. Making a triple sized batch will require 2
quart container. I use a 2.5
quart Rubbermaid juice container with handle like these:

Don't try blending 9 cups of chopped cabbage and 5.25 cups of water in a blender all at once. Do 3 cups cabbage and 1.75 cups of water blended, then empty into the container and repeat that 2 more times. Buy 2 of the largest heads of cabbage you can find. This is one weeks worth of cabbage. Use large (long) sharp knife and starting at the top (opposite the core stalk) make horizontal cuts (parallel to bottom of cabbage) slightly over 1
inch apart. After cutting off the top, place on either on another cutting board or maybe a large box lid you don't need anymore. Cut that disc of cabbage in a checkerboard pattern about 1 inch squares. Measure 1 cup chopped cabbage and place in blender. Make next cut on cabbage and repeat to get the next cup of cabbage. Repeat for the 3rd cup. Now add the water to blender. Place lid on blender and blend about 12 seconds. Pour into fermentation container. Repeat this whole process twice more. After finishing the nine cups of cabbage you should have only the bottom-most part of the cabbage left containing the core. Throw this away. The fermentation container should have an inch of space above the top of the mixture. Place lid on and store in warm place. Temps in the 80s is ideal. Garages are good unless they are extremely hot (95 degrees and above). After 4 days take the container and stain the mixture with cheese cloth or sterile cloth of any type into a jar. Drink immediately or whenever you like. Rejuvac should be drunk on an empty stomach and no food eaten for 2 hours afterward. Enjoy and be healthy!
