Are you sure that it was smallpox? This was supposedly erradicated. The last reported case was in 1975.

There is a virus that can show similar symptoms of blisters in some cases called Chikungunya.

There is also a virus similar to smallpox, called orthopoxvirus.

If this is actually small pox, it is the first case in many years.
