This cleansing program will purify the body so it may be healed. If you are overweight, this program will take you down to your normal body weight, and if you are underweight, it will bring you up to normal. The purpose of the entire program is to eliminate mucus from the body so that the patient is healed in a natural way.
Remember, there are no incurable diseases--only people who think they are incurable.
After cleansing the body with this program, continue with the mucusless diet and other health-preserving procedures outlined in this booklet. In this way, you will not only help rid the body of disease-causing impurities but also maintain and build vibrant good health.
The Detoxification Procedure
The detoxification procedure we recommend is taken in part from Dr. N.W. Walker's book, Raw Vegetable Juices: to Detoxicate (Phoenix, Arizona: Norwalk Press, Publishers, n.d., pp. 68-71) (P.O. Box 13206).
Supreme cleanliness is the first step towards a healthy body. Any accumulation or retention of morbid matter or waste of any kind will retard our progress towards recovery.
The natural eliminative channels are the lungs, the pores of the skin, the kidneys, and the bowels. Perspiration is the action of the sweat glands in throwing off toxins which would be injurious if retained in the body. The kidneys excrete the end products of food and body metabolism from the liver. The bowels eliminate not only the food waste but also waste matter known as body waste, in the form of used-up cells and tissues, the result of our physical and mental activities, which if not eliminated cause protein putrefaction resulting in toxemia or acidosis. The retention of such body waste has a much more insidious effect on our health than is generally suspected, and its elimination is one of the first steps toward perceptible progress toward health. The cleansing procedure will effect such elimination quickly, particularly for adults.
Juices
First thing in the morning we drink sixteen ounces of prune juice. The purpose of this prune juice is not primarily to empty the bowels, which, however, it will do anyway, but rather to draw into the intestines from every part of the body such toxic matter or body waste as may be there, and eliminate it through the bowels.
If nothing were done to replace in the body something in volume equal to the quantity of matter so eliminated, then the body would naturally be dehydrated to that extent. Therefore, we replace the toxic or acid material so removed by drinking fruit juices. This has an alkaline reaction on the system. There are various types of juice therapy--apple, carrot, grape, citrus, tomato, etc.--but use only the one chosen for the three days, and chew each mouthful thoroughly.
One of the most effective blood purifiers known is the common apple. Dr. Edward E. Shook states in his Advanced Course, Lesson number 30, page 4:
"There is no other remedial agent or herb in the whole range of known therapeutic agents, that can compare with the apple tree and, although it would be difficult to say which of its many virtues is the greatest, we suggest that its abundance of nascent oxygen compound is probably the main reason why it is such a precious food, blood purifier, and unfailing remedy for so many forms of diseases."
Other juices, of course, may be used, depending on the individual's preference and condition. Those who live in the citrus belt may use a combination, prepared fresh in the following proportions: four to six grapefruit, according to size; two to three lemons, according to size; and enough oranges to complete a total mixture of two quarts.
The combination may be varied, as you may prefer. Grape juice may also be used; however, frozen grape juice is not recommended because many unacceptable additives are combined in nearly all cases.
The brands of juices sold in the health stores grown on unsprayed and organic soils, are definitely superior to other types that are sold in grocery stores; nevertheless, for many years we have seen many tremendous cures done with brands such as Church, Tea Garden, Queen Isabella, and Welch. They still have great potency, but are not preferred when better juice is available.
After taking the sixteen ounces of prune juice first thing in the morning, within one half hour take an eight ounce glass (regular tumbler) of apple juice. Swish each mouthful thoroughly in the mouth (called chewing) so the saliva will mix with it, thereby getting all the nutritional and healing value from it. In fact, all meals should be eaten without liquids so the food is chewed thoroughly enough to become a liquid by being mixed thoroughly with saliva, which is the key that opens the door to digestion.
We repeat, do not gulp the juice. In this way, there will be no danger of regurgitation to a weak stomach, but it will be very soothing and affable. By using the saliva properly, the healing program is greatly accelerated, for the rest of the digestive juices then are able to function properly instead of haphazardly. When desired, drink a glass of plain water (preferably a glass of distilled water), followed another half hour later with more apple juice. One gallon of apple juice is consumed throughout one day. This, of course, is an approximate and suggested dosage, as age, ability to hold liquids, etc., determine the capacity for each specific case. The alternating procedure, however, has proven to be the best way, with any juice you may choose for the therapy.
Do not eat anything all day, although if you become very hungry towards evening, you may take an apple or two with the apple juice, and carrots or Celery with the carrot juice, or other suitable vegetables or fruits with the respective juice.
Other Aids
During the three-day cleanse, take one or two tablespoons of olive oil three times a day, to aid in lubricating bile and liver ducts, etc.
Breaking up the mucus during juice cleanse generally causes constipation throughout these three days; use more prune juice, or take some of our Lower Bowel Tonic, two or more capsules three times or more a day.
Begin the castor oil fomentation (explained later) during this three-day juice cleanse.
Continue this detoxification for three consecutive days. Approximately three gallons of toxic lymph will have been eliminated from the body and will have been replaced by three gallons of juices. This will result in speeding up the realkalinizing of the system. If there is a jaundice condition or pain in the liver-gall bladder area, also use three times a day formula number 3 (on page 178). After the Three-Day Cleanse
Preparatory Fast: After the first three days of cleansing, if a person has the desire or ability to do so, it is always profitable to fast one to three days using only distilled water, then a day of juice, before returning to salads and other regular foods. Do not eat any heavy foods immediately after a cleansing period or after a fast, but add these to your diet gradually. This is the best and smoothest way to get back onto solid foods.
On subsequent days, begin taking vegetable juices and vegetables and fruit, preferably all raw. For breakfast, for example, eat fruit in season, sliced, chopped or grated, some honey for sweetening, and one or two tablespoonfuls of finely grated unsalted almonds sprinkled over. Also drink one or two glasses of fresh fruit or vegetable juices thirty minutes before or after eating fruit. For lunch, eat more fruit and one pint fresh raw vegetable juices. For dinner add any one of the salads given in the menus in Diet and Salad Suggestions (by N. W. Walker, published by Norwalk Press).
If there is the slightest tendency toward appendicitis, also take high enemas, two, three or more daily for one week or longer if necessary.
Cleansing Symptoms: As the cleansing begins the housecleaning process throughout the entire system, it will be accompanied by periodic aches and pains in the areas where the cleaning action is most acute and the wastage is loading the elimination system. There are times when you will feel very rough! Do not panic on your days after cleansing or during your periods of healing. In fact, the cleaning action may produce all the symptoms and effects of severe illness, but the patient should here act with knowledge and not blame the temporary problem condition onto the cleansing solution that is taking place--for patience is required here, and much comfort should be derived in the realization that the healing process is well under way, and the sooner such discomforts come and are felt, the better.
This elimination and cleansing will not be accomplished instantaneously, and one should not expect these lifetime accumulations that are packed into the system to be miraculously squeezed and flushed out of the tissues and organs in some "colonic fashion." This will all take time. You will have high days and low days, and these will take place in cycles. These "cleansing sicknesses" come in cycles of seven days, seven weeks, seven months, and seven years in most cases, and on each of these cyclic periods there will be healing and cleansing crises. As the toxic poisons break loose and are dumped into the blood stream so they can be eliminated from the physical body, you will feel pretty rough and quite frequently during a crisis you may feel worse than you ever did before starting the program--but again, do not panic! These crises are, again, merely toxic poisons trying to get from your body (wherein they heavily load the excretory channels) and are doing you the favor of leaving as rapidly as possible (causing pain and discomfort in the elimination process). But the bad days will become fewer and fewer and the good days greater and greater, if you are faithful to the program. Professor Arnold Ehret's book Mucusless Diet Healing System (which can be purchased from any health food store) may help you to understand some of the reactions you might experience while ridding the body of toxins, wastes, and mucus.
Do not be unduly alarmed if you feel somewhat weak during or after this detoxification. Nature uses our energies for a housecleaning within us, and we soon regain greater energy and vitality as a result of a cleaner and a healthier body. It is good to do the three-day cleanse monthly or several times a year.
The Mucusless Diet
We should not put mucus into the body faster than it can be taken and eliminated. With this preventative diet, not only are the sinuses, the bronchi, and the lungs cleared, but also the constipating mucus (catarrh) in the tissues of the body from the head to the bottom of the feet.
Harmful or Mucus-Forming Foods
Secondary, denaturized, or inorganic food substances are to be eliminated from the patient's diet.
Salt: For those who are accustomed to large amounts of salt, this may sound difficult, but if you will substitute coarsely ground pepper and savory herbs, adding powdered kelp, you will find that the craving for salt will immediately begin to disappear. The black pepper is a good nutritional herb and helps rebuild the body when used in its natural state. But, when pepper is cooked in food, the molecular structure changes, so it becomes an inorganic irritant (as high heat changes the cayenne, black pepper, and spices from organic to inorganic), and this is the only time when damage results. The use of salts of a vegetable or potassium base (such as Dr. Jensen's, Dr. Bronner's, and other various ones, which in some cases contain some Sea Salt ) is all right, providing it is not overdone.
Eggs: No eggs should be eaten in any form.
Sugar and All Sugar Products: You may use honey, sorghum molasses, or blackstrap molasses, but no Sugar of any type.
Meat: Eliminate all red meats from the diet. A little white fish once a week, or a bit of young chicken that has not been fed commercial food or inoculated with formaldehyde and other anti-spoilage serums, would be all right (as these are the higher forms of edible flesh), but do not use them too often.
Milk: Eliminate all dairy products, which includes butter, cheese, cottage cheese, milk, yogurt, etc. These are all mucus forming substances and, in most cases, are extremely high in cholesterol. As a substitute for butter or margarine (hardened vegetable oils, etc.), you can train your taste buds to enjoy a good, fresh, bland olive oil on vegetables, salads, and other foods and you will discover this is one of the choicest foods there is.
Flour and Flour Products: When flour is heated and baked at high temperatures, it changes to a mucus-forming substance. This is no longer a food, which means it has no life remaining therein. All wholesome food is organic, where unwholesome food or dead food is inorganic. This is the key to our whole mucusless program.
Supplements: Revitalizing and Healing Aids
Our supplement recommendations will build up strength in the body and start cutting the mucus out of the tissues and remove the catarrh from the system.
Cayenne: Take one teaspoonful of cayenne three times a day. Start gradually with 1/4 teaspoonful in a little cold water. Add 1/4 teaspoonful to this dosage every three days, until you are taking one teaspoonful three times a day (the graduated dosages will accustom your system to the pungency of the herb).
Honey and Apple Cider Vinegar: Place one tablespoonful of honey and one tablespoonful of vinegar in warm water, so that the honey will liquify. Sip this amount three times a day so that at the end of the day a total quantity of three tablespoonfuls are consumed. This must be apple cider vinegar, do not use malts or other types of vinegars, as these are damaging to the body. The apple cider vinegar is medicinal and very beneficial.
Kelp: If there is any indication of a thyroid problem, you should use between ten and fifteen kelp tablets daily. Otherwise, two or more will keep the body in good condition as preventative nutrition. This can take the place of salt and helps build a new thyroid gland. Kelp powder can be used on salads and in other foods.
Molasses: Take one tablespoon three times a day of either sorghum or blackstrap molasses.
Wheat Germ Oil: Take one tablespoonful of a good, fresh wheat germ oil three times a day.
Dietary Suggestions: Regenerative Foods
If this diet is followed as outlined, we guarantee that after a short period of time you will have much more satisfaction from the foods we recommend for better health than you ever had from the food of your former diet. You will also come to your normal weight. If you are overweight, you will lose with this diet; and if you are underweight, you will gain after having passed your "new low," as mucus must be expelled from the body before the good flesh can be restored.
Do not be concerned because this diet omits meat and the commercial types of protein, and don't worry about adding protein, as you will get all that you need in these foods. The gorilla is built on the same order as the human being, and he gets all the protein he needs from just fruit and nuts (and for the human, the greens will round out the body requirements). You can prove this program to yourself!
Morning
It is best not to "break-the-fast" (breakfast) until at least noon, except in cases of young or very active people. You will find that this will not be hard to do when you use items that we recommend (such as wheat germ oil, cayenne, etc.). These will lower the appetite while providing the need nutrition, so you will feel satisfied and will have taken these items even the second time during the morning because it is time to eat the regular noon meal but if (after taking the lower bowel tonics, wheat germ oil, cayenne, apple cider vinegar, honey, molasses, herbal teas, etc.), you have room left, are hungry, and want something to eat, the best food to start the day is a good low heated whole-grain cereal; however, this should be cereal in its wholesome state (with life in it). Or eat fresh fruits.
The cereal is prepared by first soaking the whole grain in water sixteen to twenty hours, then heating in stainless steel double boiler at a very low heat, 135 degrees or under, which can be done by pouring hot water over the grain and then applying low heat. It can also be prepared in a thermos bottle, as follows: Take a wide-mouth thermos bottle (pint, quart or whatever size you need for your size of family or individual); fill it in the early afternoon or evening one-third full of high-protein turkey red wheat; then finish filling the thermos bottle with boiling water (turning the container on its top and back once or twice, so that during the evening the water circulates completely into the bottom, or else some wheat in the bottom will not be treated).
When you uncover your vessel in the morning, after low heating the grain all night long, it should be ready for consumption. The wheat is popped open, is soft and very tasty (as none of the flavor has been lost in cooking); this procedure is still improved by pre-soaking. With a little oil or fresh butter added, it is a very delectable food. Some folks like to add cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, etc.
Wheat contains all of the potential nutrient values needed in the human body. The wheat herb or wheat grass especially is a complete food, as it provides you with protein, calcium, and all the needed enzymes, vitamins, minerals, etc., to rebuild and regenerate the cell structure of your body. The grain is alive until it is killed in some chemical storage procedure, or high heat. The test for germane wheat (which is still in a "wholesome" state, having the life therein) is to plant is and see if it will grow. This test is also valid for testing cooked wheat, and when low-heated in stainless steel, it will retain the life power and will grow! The foods, prepared in this manner, are organic; consequently, this is the manner that grains must be prepared for use. We are told in holy writ that "all wholesome grains and herbs are for man, and grain is the staff of life," but it does not say that it is permissible to grind it to a face powder fineness or to heat it above 212 degrees F., and change the molecular structure from organic to inorganic, and thereby make it very mucus-forming. The results of man's inventions indicate otherwise. Sprout the grains if you wish, in preference to popping them open with moist heat.
Sprouted grains are excellent and nutritious but if you give a growing child a bowl of sprouts for breakfast, he is hungry in a short time, so a good serving of soaked, low-heated grain tastily prepared will "stick to his ribs" for hours. Alternate the wheat with barley, millet, buckwheat, rye, oat groats (whole, not rolled oats).
Noon
If you prefer only a light lunch, then have a tossed salad--a salad as large as you want of mixed vegetables and leafy greens, using homemade olive oil dressing:
1 cup olive oil
2 tablespoonfuls apple cider vinegar
Pinch herbs, black pepper, etc.
Make this dressing to your own taste, for there are so many varieties you can make--avocado, onion, garlic, etc.--but do not use the processed dressings of the commercial market.
Juices may be taken during the afternoon: carrot, grape, apple, etc. Dried fruits and nuts are very nourishing and beneficial, and the latter are better (as a whole protein) when used in combination with the garden greens. If a person has cancer or is inclined toward cancer, do not overdo eating protein, such as nuts. This is one thing that does damage to the pancreas and, in these cases, eat the nuts only in the morning. But stay away from peanuts and concentrate on almonds. A person with a cancerous condition should use from eight to ten almonds in the morning and the same at noon. But do not take any protein from evening time until the next morning, allowing sixteen to eighteen hours for the pancreas to clear and start to work on enzymes again. All protein should be taken early in the morning. And, of course, in cancer cases, never any secondhand or secondary protein, such as meats. Proteins are a fad and are highly over-advertised. All fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts and seeds have protein in them. If you are eating a good live mucusless diet and wonder what to eat for protein, ask any gorilla. Their body organs are built just like a human's, and they live a number of years longer than humans. They are one of the strongest animals, for their weight, on the face of the earth. They are fruitarians, eating that which grows above the ground, fruits, grains, nuts and seeds. We enjoy underground roots and tubers, but they do not dig as we do; so with carrots, potatoes, beets, etc. added to the above-the-ground vegetation, we should do better than the gorilla.
We kill the cow to eat the steaks for the protein she gets from eating grass. Let's get our protein fresh and natural, not secondhand as from animal's flesh or from something in its dead state concocted by man. Commercial protein will work on the effect and give quick relief from certain ailments, but overuse of commercial types will overwork the pancreas and other glands, causing low blood Sugar (hypoglycemia) and/or diabetes (high blood sugar). The natural live protein in foods on the mucusless program will be used as needed and the surplus discarded from the body naturally when not needed. The sedimentation of the commercial type of protein of lower vibration remains in the gland of the body and causes future trouble.
Regular meals can start off with a nice cup or bowl of potassium broth. Dehydrated vegetables in the form of potassium powder or broth can be purchased from most health stores or you can prepare your own. Some health books provide instructions for making potassium broth. You can add the left-over, savory vegetables and here you have one of the most exotic-tasting, low-heated vegetable soups that is imaginable. The broth starts the meal off, and is followed with salad. There are thousands of salad combinations, and with some investigation and experimentation, you will never run short of interesting ones.
After that, serve the low-heated vegetables (many types can be prepared with various savory herbs, and these can be removed from the low heat just before serving), and these will always be tasty and beneficial as long as they are low-heated and are still in a wholesome state. At least five to six vegetables should be eaten each day, of which two should be green, leafy ones. A small amount of bland oil (such as olive oil) added to the baked potato, baked squash, etc., is very good. If you are using cayenne regularly, you may use fresh butter on your vegetables. You can explore and concoct some very interesting, intriguing meals with a little daring and imagination, and you will never need to worry if you eat copiously until you are satisfied, and you will have all the nutrition that is needed for ample physical strength; use casseroles with whole grains, etc.
You can prepare delicious casseroles with barley, rye, millet, wheat soaked as above and while low heating add fruits or vegetables, tasty herbs, etc. All lentils, beans, soys, etc., prepared this way are alive and good eating. Soys and most beans can be soaked for two or three days and then low-heated twelve to twenty hours adding onion, garlic, peppers, etc., during low-heating.
Do not drink liquids during mealtime. Mix food thoroughly with saliva. Wait 1/2 hour after eating before drinking.
Evening
This is generally the heavy meal of the day, but you can reverse this at will if you like, eating the heavy meal maybe at noon, then the light meal with a salad at night. If you prefer a warm meal, start off with a cup of vegetable broth (regular potassium broth). The broth should be followed with a salad, then the main course is steamed vegetables that have been prepared at low-heat. Be sure to always cook in stainless steel, Pyrex, or some approved vessel, but never in aluminum!
Juice or nuts, dried fruits or fresh fruits are all excellent. Whenever you use a fresh fruit, use it alone, only one type of fruit at a time. When you want to eat some other type of fruit, wait for one half hour or more at least before eating it, and this will prove much easier on your digestive system. The monodiet is also recommended for people on a healing routine. If the individual feels he is well and healthy, a fruit salad or mixed fruits at times is permissible.

In this interview, she discusses the dangers of mold and the remedial action steps you need to take if you discover you have a mold problem, and general
guidelines for diagnosing and treating allergies of all kinds.
I've known Dr. Doris Rapp for almost 20 years now, and she's a true pioneer in the treatment of allergies. She's also a prolific writer and educator. Here,
she shares her insights on molds, and how to protect yourself and your loved ones from the health hazards of this pervasive problem.
A lot of people end up just treating the symptoms of mold exposure and never get to the root of the problem. Oftentimes they don't even know that mold is
the cause of their allergies and skin problems.
While mold is "normal," it shouldn't be part of your living environment as the spores can be quite toxic. Unfortunately, many homes have water leaking in
through their roof, cracked foundations, or plumbing leaks, allowing the mold spores that are pervasive in every home the ideal environment get a foothold
and start producing a toxic home environment.
You might not realize that mold spores are universal. They are outside and the moment you open your window or door they come inside. As long as the levels
are low they present no problem. But when you have high indoor humidity and areas of high moisture the mold can grow to ten, or a hundred and even a
thousand times higher than outdoor levels and this will clearly cause problems.
I recently had some problems with mold in my own home and I share them on a separate video I recently did in which I also address what types of filters are
best from my experience.
Symptoms that Indicate You May Have a Mold Problem
One of the factors that make diagnosing a mold allergy problematic is that mold can affect your body in a number of different ways. Some start having
memory problems, while another may be experiencing a sudden change in disposition, such as agitation, anger, panic, or aggression. Headaches are common but
don't affect everyone exposed to mold. Other symptoms can include:
•Coughing and wheezing
•Sinus problems and post-nasal drip
•Itchy rashes
•Joint pain
Dr. Rapp has a video on her website www.DorisRappMD.com showing how just one drop of mold extract on a patient's
arm causes her to have trouble walking. Within minutes, the woman's joints and sinuses swell up.
"Most people don't realize that some people can be very, very sensitive," Dr. Rapp says. "… The most astounding thing in relation to mold that I've noticed
is the changes that it can affect and in your behavior. Children can't write. If you look at any of my books on my website, you'll see that their writing
is fine and I put a drop of mold allergy extract in their arm and they write upside down. They put their pencil on the paper and rip it in half.
They write very, very tiny. They write real large. They're all over the place.
Teachers don't know this. If a youngster is going to a moldy school for example, you may find that a child is fine at home but at school, they can't learn
a thing. They can't remember a thing. They can't write. They can't draw. They can't walk. Any area of the body can be affected. The teachers, educators are
not aware of the fact that molds -- and in fact, dust and chemicals and pollens and foods can affect any area of the body.
I don't know how to get this message out, but those of you that are listening, if you're fine or your child is fine and suddenly something is wrong…
Whatever it is, ask yourself,
What did they eat?
What did they touch?
What did they smell?
Most allergies occur within 15 minutes to an hour. Some reactions—the food related ones that cause colitis or bed wetting—can cause trouble right away."
Your Body's Silent Alarm System
Dr. Rapp shares an interesting fact about your body's inherent intelligence—a "silent alarm system" that you can tap into simply by checking your pulse.
"Put your wrist in your palm and put your fingers along the edge of your wrist and you can easily feel your pulse.
Is it regular?... Is it irregular?... If it's irregular or abnormally fast… it's frequently an internal warning and your body is [saying] 'my goodness what
did this individual get into? … [T]he body is going to get sick so I have to get the blood rushing around in a hurry to try to take care of this problem.'
… You can pick up this hidden alarm system by merely learning to take your pulse. If you eat the wrong food, some people's pulse gets irregular, other
people's pulse shoots up to 200. You have to figure it out. What did I eat? What did I touch? If people get into a moldy place, their pulse can suddenly
increase.
If you're going to buy a new house and when you go into the house your pulse shoots up 20 points, I can tell you right away, don't buy that house."
I recommend using an electronic heart rate monitor, such as the ones you'd use for Sprint 8 exercises, because they're incredibly precise and take the
hassle factor out of measuring your pulse. This takes all the guess work out of the measurement, and you can use them for Sprint 8, which I believe
virtually everyone benefits from.
Another test you can use is to check your handwriting after being in the space for about 15 minutes to an hour. If it's altered, it could be an indication
that something's wrong.
If you have asthma, Dr. Rapp suggests blowing into a peak flow meter while standing in different rooms of your house (or whatever area you need to check).
If you blow 400 in one room but only 300 in another, it could be a sign that something in that room is affecting you. You can also do this before and after
eating different foods, to get an indication of a potential food allergy . (If you do not have asthma, checking your breathing rate will not be useful.)
Keep in mind that different types of allergies tend to go together, so for example, if you have a mold allergy you may also be allergic to certain foods,
such as soy sauce, mushrooms, or any grain that has been stored in a moldy place.
Deciphering Your Body's Signals
Other physical signs and symptoms you can use as early indicators include:
•Red cheeks or ear lobes
•Dark under-eye circles
•Bags under your eyes
•Restless legs
At that point, ask yourself what you've just come in contact with within the last 15-60 minutes. Write it down, and start looking for patterns.
"Become a detective, pay attention," Dr. Rapp suggests. "Where do you get sick? When do you get sick? How do you get sick? Why do you get sick? If you ask
these questions, you'll come up with answers that doctors may miss."
What to Do Once You've Established that Mold is a Problem
According to Dr. Rapp, first and foremost you want to get away from the problematic area. Move if you have to.
"I've seen people try to stay in a moldy house when their child is very sick or they are very sick. They try to clean the place up. They take out the moldy
carpet and decide to paint the moldy walls. But they can become so desperately ill that it is very hard to treat them in the future," she warns.
If you can't move, here are other remedial steps you need to take to cure the problem:
•Remove the mold. NORMI (National Organization of Remediators and Mold Inspectors) has books that explain exactly what to do and what solutions to use. For
suggestions over the phone, call them at 877-251-2296.
•Get a high quality air purifier to control mold toxins. In addition to the mold itself, you also need to make sure you get rid of any mold toxins. If a
mold breaks down, it disintegrates and every little particle contains mycotoxins that have the capability of making you very sick. One way of controlling
it is to get a quality air purifier and I provide my guidelines in the video above.
Another option is the photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) unit. I personally like it because it works for the whole house (up to 3000 square feet), requires
little maintenance, and is relatively inexpensive. A machine that produces ozone at biological levels is also safe and can be very effective in removing
odors.
If you end up with mold in your car or home make certain you get it professionally evaluated. This may not be cheap but it is better than the alternative.
If you catch the problem early on you can save yourself tens of thousands of dollars in extra clean up expenses. Trust me as I made this mistake and
wouldn't want to see anyone else go through it.
You simply must identify the hidden sources of water that are increasing the humidity levels and allowing the mold to grow. Please understand that no
filter in the world will take care of mold issue until you have the humidity under control and the mold properly cleaned.
One you do this you will need to have a professional remediator.Make sure they don't use chemicals that you're sensitive to. Again, you can check to see if
the chemicals bother you by checking your pulse or breathing, and evaluating how you look, feel and act before and after exposure.
"It's like when somebody has their ductwork cleaned because of molds or dust. If they spray chemicals in the ductwork to which you happen to be sensitive,
you might never be able to live in that house again because you can't clean the chemicals out," Dr. Rapp warns.
That's where ozone can be helpful as it dissipates quite rapidly. You can use it as an intervention and there is no residual ozone left when you're done.
One important caveat is that you must remove pets and plants from your home before using an ozone machine as it can be harmful to both. We also discuss

Using Allergy Extracts
This is a little-known treatment strategy that Dr. Rapp describes as "one of the best hidden secrets."
"It's called provocation neutralization allergy testing," she explains. "You can put a drop of a mold mixture in somebody's arm that looks perfectly
normal. If they have asthma, you can produce asthma in seconds. Within eight minutes, they will be sick… That's why they call it provocation. You would
provoke the actual symptoms of the mold producers.
So if molds cause you to have a headache and fatigue, you put on a drop and you're going to have a headache and feel tired. If it causes hyperactivity and
asthma, you're going to have those symptoms… Then, if you give that patient increasing dilutions -- so you give them a 1 to 5 [dilution] and then a 1 to
25, and then a 1 to 125; one drop of that allergy extract in the right dilution will render the patient is entirely normal within eight minutes. The
problem is that there aren't a lot of doctors that know this technique, and your insurance may not cover it."
Then, any time you experience your allergy symptoms, you can simply put a few drops on your tongue of the right dilution to eliminate your symptoms within
a few minutes. That's why it's called neutralization; it neutralizes your symptoms. In my experience, provocation neutralization (PN) tends to be about 80
percent effective.
"The thing that amazes me is that some people will continue with medical care for 20 years, [even though] they know it doesn't help," Dr. Rapp says. "They
are continuing it mainly because the insurance company pays for it. They don't want to spend the money to get provocation neutralization allergy testing
which could make them better. I have seen patients who could barely walk in the office and by noon, they are well… It can be that fast… Once you find that
[correct] dose, it works like a miracle."

"Remember when you have an allergy, it's like having a nail in your shoe that's causing a sore in your foot," Dr. Rapp says. "You can put on a bigger
bandage, you can take drugs… but the ultimate answer if you got a nail in your shoe is to take the nail out. This is what we have to convey to people;
taking one pill after another is not resolving the problem!
Figure out why you are sick. What did you eat, touch, and smell? Get rid of the cause if you can. If you can't, then get a treatment that works. If regular
treatment works, fine. But if you're relying on drugs, you'll be taking drugs 20 years from now and you might just be sleeping on a feather pillow or
drinking milk every day and that's what's causing your symptoms! Wouldn't it be better to get rid of the feather pillow or stop drinking or eating the
foods that causing the problems?"
Identifying food allergies without Spending a Dime
Now, if you suspect you have a food allergy , but can't afford provocation neutralization allergy testing, does that mean you're doomed to a life of allergy
meds? No! Dr. Rapp suggests going on a one-week allergy-elimination diet, described in detail in all of her books, as well as on her website.
"Basically, you take away the highly allergenic foods for one week. If these foods are causing allergies, the first one or two days, you might have
headaches, feel tired, have a belly ache. But by day five to seven on that diet, you might feel better than you felt in 20 years.
The second week, you add one food back every morning on an empty stomach, then wait and see what happens… By the end of the second week, you know not only
which foods cause trouble but which symptoms they cause.
The tip here is, if you develop symptoms with a food, take one to two teaspoons of baking soda… Many times the symptoms will disappear in a few minutes.
This is a way of solving food allergies or diagnosing food allergies within a week or two weeks without costing you a penny."

disease, and, of course, allergies.
"We have to start to emphasize what's causing these terrible things and get rid of them," she says. "That's what my books do. They try to tell you what's
making you sick and offer sensible solutions to these kinds of problems.
… One of my books is, "Is This Your Child's World?"… I challenge you to not find the answer in that book about allergies. …Until we start to emphasize
prevention, we are going to continue to have these terrible illnesses. Every day I hear of somebody else -- a friend of mine has developed cancer. I say,
please Lord, start to wake them up. We can't breathe, eat or drink. We have cancer-causing substances in the air, the food, the water, the homes, the
schools and the workplace… We have to start eating organic food and drink pure water, and exercise and keep our bowels moving. If we don't do this, we're
going to get these terrible illnesses."
Jack Thrasher, PhD, is extremely knowledgeable on the topic of mold and how it impacts your health. Interestingly, from a toxicity point of view, some
mycotoxins that molds produce are actually far more toxic than heavy metals, in terms of concentration. Mold mycotoxins also tend to affect more biological
systems in your body than pesticides or heavy metals do.
"For example, stachybotrys produces mycotoxins referred to as trichothecene. They inhibit protein synthesis. It infects every organ of your body
from your toes to the top of your head,"
Dr. Thrasher says. "I really think that the molds are much more dangerous from that point of view."
This flies in the face of what is commonly appreciated about toxic contaminants. Most would assume that pesticides or heavy metals would be far more
dangerous. However, mold is a very significant health issue. And despite the fact that molds have been around forever, mankind has not developed greater
tolerance against them than more modern chemical toxins. Part of that is because they tend to rapidly mutate.
"Let's take a look at Cryptococcus for example,"
Dr. Thrasher says
. "Cryptococcus used to be endemic to the desserts of southwest United States. Now there is a new species… that was accidentally released up in
Vancouver, Canada. It's spreading from the northwest throughout the country. It's a mutated form, [and] highly pathogenic to humans. About 25 to 30
percent of the humans who have become infected with it die… When they mutate they avoid our immune system.
The other thing they can do is produce chemicals that suppress your immune system at the same time. So therefore, I don't think we'll ever become
resistant to these organisms."
According to Dr. Thrasher, the prevalence of mold in America is so great, he refers to it as pandemic. As many as 40 percent of all American schools
and at least 25 percent or more of all homes are believed to be affected by mold and microbial growth due to water intrusion. A large portion of the
problem stems from shoddy construction.
He explains:
"One thing that I have seen and observed by working with individuals in the field who understand construction, is that construction is
extremely poor in the homes we have today. Plus, they're using building materials that are tremendous good food material for the microbes.
When I was a child… all the homes were built with genuine lath and plaster on the inside. [Now] you walk in and knock on any wall and you have
what we call wallboard. That wallboard loves and is a good growth medium for all forms of mold. Everyone that I can think of, almost everyone
now has carpets. The backside of carpets is also a great growth medium for mold and bacteria.
… The other type of home that I'm seeing that is of tremendous potential problems to the homeowner is homes that are built with a basement…
[T]hey put the concrete down, and there is no water barrier between the earth and the concrete wall of the basement.
The same thing with the foundation, there is no water barrier. So when you water your yard, when there are heavy rains and things like this,
the moisture… goes right to the foundation and into the basement or underneath the house, and then the moisture wicks up through the home,
increasing humidity.
All of that increasing humidity, anything above 60 percent is going to lead to growth of mold and bacteria… People have to be
very careful about this situation. That's the reason why I call it a pandemic."
Gutters can also cause problems. You need to be mindful of the drainage from your roof. I didn't realize this myself, and suffered the consequences
when one of the gutters on my home drained onto the ground directly beside the wall, and the water seeped straight through to my basement. So you want
to make sure the downspout is far enough away from the building. Ideally, it should empty at least 5 to 10 feet from the wall.
You also want to take care that the soil next to the walls of your home slopes away from the walls, to prevent water from collecting around
the foundation. And make sure your lawn sprinklers do not spray the walls. Other common construction issues that can contribute to water intrusion and
subsequent mold proliferation include:
Using polyethylene PVC piping instead of copper or galvanized piping, which can be easily punctured by nails or staples
Bath tubs installed with improper sealing around the drain
Improperly sealed sinks and garbage disposal
Installing particleboard (waferboard) after it has been rained on during construction
Growing right along with mold are what's called 'gram negative' and 'gram positive' bacteria. Just like mold, they require moisture and organic
material to thrive, and the synergistic action between mold and bacteria further increase and worsen inflammatory health conditions.
"The gram positive are group of bacteria that are being totally overlooked,"
Dr. Thrasher says.
"These positive bacteria consist of several bacilli, cocci, and one group called the actinomycetes. The actinomycetes contain several different
groups of bacteria like mycobacterium. We're all familiar with… mycobacterium tuberculosis.
There are 139 other species of mycobacterium that can grow in our environment and 11 to 12 of those in the indoor environment are very serious
human pathogens and can cause a condition called mycobacterium avium complex... and this is a very dangerous situation. It causes serious
infection of the lungs and can spread throughout the body. Many of the symptoms are those of hypersensitivity pneumonitis. The condition can go
on and develop into an asthma-like condition and then also into sarcoidosis particularly of the mediastinum.
Then the other group are the streptomyces… Streptomyces gave rise to a lot of Antibiotics . Also, streptomyces are a source of many of the
chemotherapeutic agents that are used today. These organisms are growing in the indoor environment."
Gram negative bacteria are also extremely harmful. When they die, they release their cell walls, which are referred to as lipopolysaccharide, or
endotoxins. These endotoxins can severely exacerbate asthma and other conditions because they are highly inflammatory. According to Dr. Thrasher,
research indicates the inflammation they cause can also affect your brain and other organs.
Clearly, the first step would be to conduct a visual inspection. A musty, mildew odor is a tip-off that you need to check the area in question for any
visible signs of mold. If you can't see any visible traces of mold, Dr. Thrasher recommends taking an air sample, and using a moisture meter to
determine the moisture level in the area.
"I use a moisture meter on every wall of the building or the home looking for hidden moisture. The moisture content of wood flooring, for
example, should be no more than 10 to 12 percent. I'm finding floors that have moisture content of 48 percent. Exterior walls shouldn't have
anything more than 15 percent, and I'm finding exterior walls with 40, 50, 60 percent.
… The other thing I recommend is to not rely on air samples from mold spore counts. Invariably, that will give you misinformation. The number
of mold spores that are in the indoor environment and the outdoor environment vary over the day; it's a diurnal type variation… So it's not a
very reliable test for what's in the air.
Secondly, there are certain bacteria that do not release their spores into the air very regularly and you won't find them in the air… So become
educated as to what to look for and how to look for it, and don't accept somebody coming in, taking an air sample and saying, "There is nothing
wrong with this because the indoor counts are less than outdoor counts." That's wrong logic. Certain species of mold grow indoors much more
regularly than they do outdoors. So you have to look at the species of mold, not just the spores."
A better option is to do 24-hour monitoring. However, this type of testing cannot be performed by a typical mold inspector. You need to hire a
high-level mold expert for this type of air testing. (I'll list several sources for finding a qualified expert below.) Dr. Thrasher also suggests
interviewing the expert in question to find out who they typically work for.
"If they're doing work for insurance companies stay away from them,"
he says.
"You want somebody who is unbiased… [Also] ask them the question, "If you take the airborne mold in the indoor environment can it hurt you or
cause toxic reaction?" If the person says, "No, don't worry about it. All it can do is cause allergies," then stay away from that person. That
person is not well informed."
After air sampling, Dr. Thrasher also takes swab and bulk samples of the mold growth; actually cutting out a piece of the affected area if necessary,
for proper lab testing. Dr. Thrasher explains what he typically tests for:
"We culture for the bacteria. We culture for the mold. We do what we call ERMI (Environmental Relative Moldiness Index), which is an EPA test
that was developed by a group in the EPA. This is a PCR-DNA analysis for 31 different species of mold… that is very inexpensive, relatively
speaking. It costs $350 to do that test… [W]e take swab samples looking for endotoxins. We also look for… polysaccharides called
1,3-beta-D-glucans… We want to get a good idea what's going on in the indoor environment."
As soon as you've identified the problem, you have to stop the water intrusion and remediate the problem at its source.
"Let's say you have an infested wall that's in the middle of the home between the living room and say, the adjoining den; what is recommended
is that the whole area must be walled off from the rest of the house… In other words, you drape them with a plastic and you have to tie the
plastic down with masking tape so that that area will not, theoretically, contaminate the rest of the house,"
Dr. Thrasher explains.
While you can clean affected metal objects, all organic materials (such as wood, particle board, and carpets) must be completely removed and replaced.
You want to make sure that the contractor you hire for the job uses a HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Arresting) filtration machine to trap minute
particles, and that they're meticulous when using it.
There is no question that a high quality active air purifier can help control mold issues but it will NOT
remediate against them. You can use the best air filters and purifiers and they will never solve the problem if you continue to have water intrusion
into you home that increases the humidity and feeds the growth of the mold.
You will need to stop the water at its source and carefully remove and clean the mold infested materials. While this may superficially seem an easy
task, let me assure you that it isn't.
I recently had a leak in my basement that was improperly remediated for $10K. The cause was not addressed so the problem worsened, which more than
tripled the price to properly clean it up. That is part of the reason that prompted me to contact some of the leading experts in this area and learn
how to do this properly.
So let me tell you from personal experience, you need to find a qualified expert and professional that is certified by one of the agencies below. I
would also suggest getting several bids for the work. You can find contractor or professional listings on the following sites. Both the IICRC and NORMI
are certifying organizations for mold remediation, but the IICRC certification is perhaps the most widely used:
IICRC
(Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification)
ACAC
(American Council for Accredited Certification)—a certifying body that is third-party accredited.
The IAQA
(Indoor Air Quality Association)—a membership organization with no certification program (the ACAC handles this by agreement)
RIA
(Restoration Industry Association)
NORMI
(National Organization of Remediators and Mold Inspectors)
Keep in mind that a mere certification or listing may not be enough. Also evaluate the remediator's qualifications and insurance (liability as well as
workman's comp). With the ACAC, there are a few different levels.
If you have just a small area of surface mold, you probably don't have to call in an expert. However, only attempt to clean it if it's limited to the
surface of a small area. You cannot "clean" deep-rooted mold. Dr. Thrasher has one word for those of you who have bought into the home-remedy advice to
"kill off mold" with ammonia or bleach: Don't.
"What happens is you'll kill the mold but you'll leave the carcass behind,"
Dr. Thrasher explains.
"The carcass will disintegrate and release toxins into the air. So you really went from one problem (mold growth) to another problem; dead mold
and the release of all of their toxins… and then once water is reintroduced in the environment, the mold will grow right back to the surface."
However, for minor visible surface mold on say a baseboard, or on a piece of furniture, you could use a little bit of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and
vinegar to wipe it off.
"I just use the concentrated vinegar and baking soda,"
he says.
"All you need is a couple of tablespoons [of baking soda] to a quart of water. The vinegar I just take straight out of the bottle… I generally
do the vinegar first and then follow it with the baking soda… The vinegar will kill the mold and the bacteria but you're going to leave residue
on the surface and so you scrub the surface to try to get rid of the residue.
… I never validated that procedure, but that's what I recommend; what I do use and it seems to work, but I haven't validated it with research
data. I have to be honest with the population out there."
While Dr. Thrasher does not recommend using an ozone generator, other indoor air experts do. Ozone generators essentially generate
photocatalytic oxidation that can help destroy airborne mold. However, Dr. Thrasher strongly cautions against their use, stating that oxidizing an
organic chemical of any kind will create free radicals, and he also points out that ozone can be highly irritating to your mucous membranes and lungs.
Personally, I believe the claim that ozone generators facilitate the removal of volatile organics is correct… But do beware that they should not be used when you're in the room at levels higher than the EPA recommends, and they do pose a danger to both plants and pets. However, the
ozone dissipates quickly, so after airing the area out for about 20 minutes, it's safe to return.
Keep in mind that this is different from air filtration, as the ozone generator actually purifies the air and neutralizes any odors at the source, on
the molecular level.
Common health problems that can be attributed to poor and potentially toxic indoor air quality include:
Frequent headaches
Depression
Chronic fatigue
Allergies
Neurological problems; poor concentration and forgetfulness
Skin rashes
Stomach and digestive problems, such as dysbiosis, leaky gut, and frequent diarrhea
Chronic sinusitis
Joint aches and pains
Muscle wasting
Frequent fevers
Asthma or trouble breathing
If you have any of these issues, it may be worthwhile to consider your indoor air quality, and the possibility that your health problems may be related
to mold. A meta-analysis, published in last year in the journal Environmental Health,
concluded that:
"Residential dampness and mold are associated with substantial and statistically significant increases in both respiratory infections and
bronchitis. If these associations were confirmed as causal, effective control of dampness and mold in buildings would prevent a substantial
proportion of respiratory infections."
It's important to determine whether or not your health problems are indeed due to mold, in order to properly treat it. Most doctors will simply
prescribe an Antibiotic for chronic sinusitis, for example. But if your sinusitis stems from bacteria- and mold growth in your home, it's not going to
clear up. The next step is typically to prescribe either prednisone or a corticosteroid, which could further worsen your condition.
"You want to stay away from the corticosteroids; you want to stay away from the Antibiotics ,"
Dr. Thrasher warns
. "What you need to do is to do a culture. Go to a good ENT physician and actually get a diagnosis of what is going on inside of your sinuses.
You want to stay away from the corticosteroids because two weeks use -- or even less than this -- of corticosteroids will increase your risk of
other infections. Corticosteroids inhibit the oxidative burst produced by macrophages… Let's say you have mold that's growing in your sinuses.
So the macrophages in your body, called the innate immune system, are in there gobbling up the spores of the mold, correct?
Then what happens is they put you on corticosteroids, and the role of the macrophages, they'll gobble them up, engulf them, and then produce
oxidative burst that kill the spores and the bacteria. The corticosteroids do not inhibit the engulfing aspect of it so they take up the spores
and the bacteria, but the corticosteroids inhibit the extra oxidative burst produced by the macrophages. Now, the macrophages contain live
spores and bacteria. Now where do they go?
They go any place else in the body they want to go to. So therefore you have increased your risk of other infections particularly fungal
infections. I've seen individuals who have been put on corticosteroids because they have been exposed to these indoor environments and then,
sometime down the road, have been diagnosed with Aspergillosis."
That's definitely a concern. Additionally, long term use of steroids has other side effects that are well documented, including increasing your risk of
osteoporosis and cataracts, and disrupting your hormone balance. So, educate yourself on indoor air quality, and particularly on mold. For more
