I had cavitation surgey, but it was a dozen years or so ago. In the mean time the company that devised the cavitat machine filed for bankruptcy after legal battles with Aetna insurance. My dentist was involved and ended up losing his state licence to practice.
More to the point about whether surgery is necessary, i found this link that should explain the reason surgery is needed. The bone needs cleaned, and oxygen is needed to kill the type of bacteria involved.
