A recent article in the Journal of The American Medical Association (JAMA) identifies B12 deficiencies as a result of antacid medications. B12 deficiencies are associated with anemia, headaches, confusion, tiredness, constipation, moodiness, memory loss, dementia, Alzheimer’s, anxiety, infertility, cancers, psychosis, Multiple Sclerosis, cardiovascular disease, macular degeneration, brain shrinkage, and other conditions. Antacid medications include Proton Pump Inhibitors (Prilosec, Prevacid, Aciphex, Protonix, and Nexium) or H2 Receptor antagonists (Tagamet, Zantac, Ranitidine). The recent awareness of B12 as an additional deficiency created by the use of these medications will eventually make its way to becoming yet another Black Box warning on their labels.
