The heartbroken parents of Avielle Richman, a young victim of the Sandy Hook shooting incident, have formed an organization to investigate brain pathologies, injury and treatments for those suffering from mental illness. I salute them for transforming such a negative into a positive that the world desperately needs.
"The Avielle Foundation seeks to understand brain pathologies that lead to aggression and violence and to foster community and community-based initiatives to apply these understandings for the health, wellness, and protection our loved ones.
We have established the Avielle Foundation to address the causes of violence through a focus on brain health. We want to start using this term, brain health, because mental health is intangible – it comes with some degree of fear and trepidation. But we know there are real, physical manifestations within the brain that can be imaged, measured, quantified, and understood – We can work with that, and then, we can fix it.
To ignore the biological basis of violence is to squander the opportunity to prevent violence. By not understanding and working to improve the health of the brain, we are risking lives–those of our friends, families, our neighbors, and ourselves. If we continue to ignore the powerful
Science of the brain, we must also accept the blame for future violence."
