Which part of what I stated do you question?
There are all sorts of journal articles on selenium helping with thyroid issues(among others), many in patients with existing thyroid issues. Goto pubmed and search for it, youll get over 100 results with free full texts.
A couple of the most important enzymes in the thyroid are selenoproteins so require selenium (once again well documented). However just like with
Iodine your not going to find many studies that use selenium supplementation at or above what our FDA says is the safe upper limit and I think we can all agree that the safe upper limit established by government is often very conservative. I would wager many of the sides people get from taking too much selenium are because they are lacking the supporting supps (ie iodine). Much like abraham with his
Iodine research there are other practitioners whose primary focus is on selenium.
We know the thyroid cant do its job properly without
Iodine which is required for the creation of Thyroid hormones. Selenium is required to to make Iodothyronine deiodinase which is an enzyme responsible for converting t4 to t3 among other things(once again all fairly well documented). If we are amping up our iodine intake but not getting the selenium needed for the body to properly process the iodine we end up in a situation where we still have side effects of an improperly functioning thyroid.
Selenium is one of those things that you do need to be careful with and like with many nutrients the FDA bases its safe upper limit on a population rife with other deficiencies. If your adding iodine but not providing selenium in adequate doses to work with the additional iodine its like baking a cake with half the flour.
If your on iodine, start to improve, then seem to backslide (which I have seen posted about a lot here I might add) I would slowly add more selenium and monitor your symptoms closely. I dont know that I would personally take it up to 1mg daily BUT I have watched interviews from some docs that do go that high BUT only when accompanied by the proper supporting nutrients.
