I agree with you on all points.
After 3 yrs of Cutler Protocol for lead poisoning, I appreciate the "low and slow" method. I don't tolerate high doses. I certainly would not want to expose a child who cannot communicate well to high doses!
The Yahoo Autism-Mercury has until recently been a good source of support for those using Cutler's and other detox protocols. However since the recent book Fight Autism and Win, one of the coauthors started a new Yahoo group by the same name that focuses just on Cutler protocol support. Cutler occasionally posts in the Yahoo chelation groups.
Autism Research Institute treatment parent ratings 2009
http://www.autism.com/index.php/treatment_ratings_asd
"Detox. (chelation)" 74% report "got better", 3% report "got worse", 23% report "no effect"
The 74% rating is the best of all of the many dozens of listed interventions.
More on dealing with doctors and their various opinions in this discussion between Cutler and Dr Amy Holmes, a DAN doctor and mother of an autistic son who improved with chelaton.

Dr. Amy Holmes. Early results with autistic children while using a variation of the Cutler Protocol.
http://www.healing-arts.org/children/holmes.htm#results
Roughly 58% of children under 12 (75% < age 6) made "moderate" or greater improvement in less than a year.
As parents come to know other autistic kids who got better with detox, they will want those gains in their kids. Fortunately we have a way to detox that does not require much support from a doctor. It should be that parents could get detox support from their doctor! However, if mainstream medicine wants to make themselves irrelevant they can do that. We'll still get much improved without them.
