Had my Mirena in for one year and removed it a month ago due to ongoing severe GI issues....near constant stomach, rib, abdominal and back pain, diarrhea, lack of appetite and weight loss, constant debilitating nausea and feeling severly ill, and anxiety attacks (often altogether - a big unpleasant trifecta of diarrhea, nausea and anxiety on a daily basis, usually waking me up at night or interrupting me at work, how fun!) only thing that would sometimes help was Ativan and gravol combined with Motrin for the pain. Tests and meds ruled out gallbladder issues or ulcers, Dr. said no way was Mirena causing this but had it out anyways.
Two weeks after removal I was starting to feel better then suddenly i was in the hospital with severe back pains and turns out its a large kidney stone, had to have surgery. They sent me home and a week later I was peeing huge clots, back to hospital, sent back home with flomax and painkillers, next day can't pee at all, back to hospital to find huge blood clot in bladder, have catheter inserted and in hospital for three days draining blood out of my insides.
Has now been a month post mirena removal, I have not had a real period and on top of the hospitalization and fear the bleeding will return I am having almost daily anxiety attacks, nausea, depression, low appetite. Not sure if its mirena crash or from the
kidney stone surgery or whats going on. Only positive is my bowel movements seem somewhat normal and stomach pain has subsided for the moment when I do eat. I am taking my regular cipralex and Ativan when I have attacks but still feel so depressed and listless. I hope this gets better when my cycle goes back to normal cause right now I just can't bear it and am dreading going back to work next week.
Before I had mirena I did have mild IBS and anxiety/
Depression but had been treating it with cipralex and the rare Ativan which was working well, nothing like what I had with mirena or now. I never had issues with rib back or the kind of stomach pain i was having, or daily and nighttime anxiety/nausea/diarrhea attacks (that my doctor said were heartburn, minus the heartburn feeling, haha). Never had a
kidney stone nor a family history of them, I eat and drink fairly well and am a low weight, well underweight now.
Mirena and now it's removal have been a nightmare. The first 6 months were ok, except for near constant spotting, but boy did it turn bad after that. I am furious that doctors refuse to take my symptoms seriously and acknowledge the coincidence of all this occurring when I got the mirena in. I would not suggest anyone with any history of anxiety,
Depression or IBS ever use hormonal birth control even if doctors tell you it's a "low, localized dose". I just hope that now that its out my body will slowly begin to recover from the hormonal onslaught and foreign body that was tricking it into thinking it was pregnant for 12 months. In the meantime I will have to fight through this
Depression and general crappy feeling and wondering if anyone has any tips on getting through the post mirena period, and how long I can expect this depression and anxiety to last?
If anyone wants more info, feel free to email me. I want to share my story as wide as possible so people consider the dangers of mirena and other hormonal birth control, like the nuvaring and the pill which I have also been on in the past with similar results (depression, sickness, etc.) I feel doctors downplay and refuse to acknowledge these very possible side effects and are also irresponsible in continuing to prescribe them to those with a history of hormonal sensitivities, depression and IBS. We need to get the word out there but other than through forums like these I'm not sure how...doctors and drug companies certainly won't listen or do anything about it...
