I just received some kefir water grains (3 tbs) in the mail. I boiled some water, waited for it to cool and put all 3 tbs with 1.5 litres of water and just over a 1/3 of a cup of coconut palm sugar in. When I received them they were little jelly crystal looking things. Now they are all string and no jelly in the water? I am starting to freak out thinking I did something wrong. I used all plastic and they are in glass. How can I revive these or is this normal?- Re: Whats happening to my Kefir Wate... Kcirla

This is a reply to # 2,063,627I assume you used tap water. Did you let the water boil for at least 15 minutes? Just bringing it to a boil is not enough. Anyway, I've never used tap water for my water kefir grains, always mineral water. Also, I've always used organic brown sugar, half a lemon, 2 dried figs and sometimes some egg shell (grains need minerals to grow like crazy). That is for 2 liters of water.

This is a reply to # 2,066,525I figured it out, I thought they werent working but I couldnt see properly as the water was quite dark. When I drained the water it was fine, they had actually grown. My tap water is so much different then most. I live in Vancouver, B.C. Canada, we have the cleanest and best tap water in the world. In fact there are a few bottled waters that actually bottle tap water and sell it in stores.
