Fasting is one of the most powerful therapies on earth, but can actually be quite damaging if not done the right way.
Some people here will tell you to fast on nothing but water, and let the body do the rest. Do NOT do that, otherwise you could get into serious troubles.
Fasting will allow the body to rest and use its energy towards healing and fighting what makes you sick in the first place. During fasting a big load of toxins is dumped into the gut and the bloodstream, being from cells or dying pathogens that were living there.
During this phase, everything needs to be done to assist the elimination of toxins. That means getting a good bile flow (bile carries the toxins the liver has to filter), getting frequent bowel movements, and keeping the kidneys in good shape (some sweating can be beneficial too). Otherwise you will only stress your organs and keep reabsorbing those toxins. This could lead to severe problems, even death eventually for severly sick people.
Also, during fasting the friendly flora will be greatly reduced. If you break a fast the wrong way with the wrong foods, pathogens can start taking over because of lack of gut flora, and this will only make your problems worse soon after.
So fast, yes, but please for your sake pay attention to the points I mentionned.
