As if the daily exposure of toxic halogens weren't enough, we are also bombarded with these other "pseudo-iodines" on a regular basis: perchlorate, cyanate, thiocyanate, and nitrate.
"The mechanism of iodine in the cells is very ancient and lacking of specificity, in fact, cells are not able to distinguish iodide from other anions of similar atomic or molecular size, which may act as “pseudo-iodides”: bromide, flouride, chlorine, thiocyanate, cyanate, nitrate, pertechnate, perchlorate" (Wolff J (1964) Transport of iodide and other anions in the thyroid gland. Physiol Rev 44:45-90)
Perchlorate
In the United States especially people will want to note that iodine also is protective and effective at eliminating perchlorate from the body. Perchlorate, the explosive ingredient in solid rocket fuel, has leaked from military bases and defense and aerospace contractors' plants in at least 22 states, is contaminating drinking water, dairy milk, produce and many other foods and plants affecting millions of Americans. In the past year, CDC scientists have found that a significant number of women are at risk of thyroid hormone depression from perchlorate exposure. Perchlorate impairs the thyroid’s ability to take up iodide and produce hormones critical to proper fetal and infant brain development. Further, studies show that breast milk may have even more worrisome levels of perchlorate.
The EPA's proposed safe exposure level for the rocket fuel contaminant perchlorate is not protective of public health. In the past year, CDC scientists have found that a significant
number of women are at risk of thyroid hormone depression from perchlorate exposure.[xiii]
The CDC/BU (Boston University) study,[xiv] which examined breast milk from 49 Boston area women, found that the average breast fed infant in this study is being exposed to more than double the dose of perchlorate that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers safe; highly exposed babies are ingesting up to 10 times this amount. In a related 2006 study, the CDC found perchlorate in the urine of every one of 2,820 people tested, suggesting that food is a key route of exposure in addition to drinking water.[xv] Applying the results of the CDC study to the California population, EWG estimates that at exposure to 5 ppb of perchlorate in drinking water, 1 in 10 California women of childbearing age with low iodine intake would be diagnosed as sub-clinically hypothyroid and require medical treatment when pregnant to protect themselves and their babies.[xvi]
Cyanate and Thiocyanate:
Thiocyanate and cyanate are both intermediates in the decomposition of cyanide. In addition to pesticide and insecticide, cyanide is contained in tobacco smoke, smoke from building fires and some foods, like almonds, apricot kernel, cassava, yucca, manioc, and apple seeds.
In manufacturing, cyanide is present in the chemicals used to make numerous products such as paper, textiles, and plastics.
"Although thiocyanate is approximately seven times less toxic than cyanide, increased thiocyanate concentrations in the body resulting from chronic cyanide exposure can adversely affect the thyroid."
"Another common source of cyanide is hydrocyanic acid from cigarette smoke. Levels in inhaled mainstream cigarette smoke range from 10 to 400 μg per cigarette (U.S. brands); 0.6% to 27% (w/w) of these mainstream levels are found in secondary or sidestream smoke."
How many packs a day did YOUR parents smoke in the house? (and how many micrograms of iodine does the USDA recommend you intake each day?)
10 cigarettes a day at 400µg per cigarette = 4000µg cyanide. 25% of this in sidestream smoke yields 1mg of hydrocyanic acid (Zyklon B) floating around your house everyday. 3 packs yields 60 cigarettes a day which comes to 6mg a day. This is an insane amount of poison.
"The lethal dose of hydrocyanic acid is 50 mg"
Would you want to be inhaling 1/8 the lethal dose of Zyklon B everyday?

"In Germany and South Africa the drinking water standard for nitrate is 4.4 ppm -- more than twice as strict as the U.S. standard of 10 ppm (Kross, et al. 1995). The European Economic Community has established a nitrate health guideline of 5.6 ppm, and studies of infants in Europe have found that three to four percent of methemoglobinemia cases in infants occurred at doses lower than 10 ppm (Sattelmacher 1964; Simon 1962). Clearly, health authorities in many other countries believe that nitrate poses an unacceptable risk to infants and children below the current EPA standard of 10 ppm."
10ppm is 10µg per gram of water (1 mL) which is 10mg/L!! With 3 liters of water That is 30mg a DAY! This is an insane amount of poison!!!
Likely exposure pathways include ingesting contaminated drinking water, and foods containing preservatives, particularly cured meats such as hot dogs and lunch meats (4-7). Nitrates have also been detected in fruits and vegetables.
Hmm it's a good thing I only ate a pound of this stuff a day (with cyanide loaded plastic utensils thank you very much)
I wonder how much of what is labeled "iodine toxicity" is actually cyanate, nitrate, and perchlorate detox?
