Hey there Starheart (and hello Wheatgrass Yogi !),
I haven't gone 40 days, but i have done 30, 30 and 36.5, each of which has been chronicled herein. What made these fasts sustainable for me primarily was that i was able to relax almost entirely and to be unencumbered by work and other responsibilities. I did a whole lot of laying down on these fasts (mostly a lot of reading while laying) and exercised only minimally in the 2 more recent fasts with only very short, gentle trampolining as a means of helping to flush the lymphs.
The way i felt for the majority of these 2 fasts (largely i believe because i allowed my system to relax and slow down so deeply) was comfortable laying down and uncomfortable doing anything else. Particularly when things got rough as with a couple of short bouts of nausia, it was fantastic to have the freedom to just lay down 23.5 hours per day since anything else was outrageously strenuous and difficult.
In the first of these 3 major fasts by contrast i did a lot of exercise, about 2 hours of brisk walking each of the first 21 days before choosing to cut this back to about 20 minutes per day (partly due to a busy schedule of visiting with family and friends during this time) for the final 9 days. It is said that the heavy exercising keeps us from detoxing as deeply and thus makes us feel better and stronger which indeed i did.
Also and as an important part of this, i would say that my blood pressure and heart rate during this first fast both remained higher (remained more normal) making me feel less weak. Note too that in the final 9 days of this first fast i felt weaker with 20 minutes of brisk walking than in the first 21 days where i was brisk walking for 2 hours.
For the 2nd and 3rd fasts i welcomed the weakness if it meant i was cleansing and healing more aggressively which i believe i was. My morning blood pressure was about 83/65 in the last week of my 36.5 days which is one of the important factors in making me feel as weak as i did.
