Is there any way to increase the enzyme Catalase? I understand that the lack thereof contributes to greying of hair. I also understand that any "catalase supplement" is largely ineffective b/c when it is ingested it is denatured by stomach acid. As a matter of fact, I read that it becomes denatured by anything acid OR alkaline. Are you aware of any natural method to supply this enzyme or encourage it. What else can be done to combat naturally occurring hydrogen peroxide in our bodies?
I found this claim interesting. While I do not have an issue with grey hair, my dearest friend is quite grey. She asked that I inquire.
First thing to keep in mind is that catalase is not the only enzyme involved in the breakdown of peroxide. And the peroxide idea is just a hypothesis, and may not be the only cause of graying hair. For example, it has been known for a while that a lack of phenylalanine will also lead to gray hair. Copper deficiencies also lead to graying hair, although this may go back to the peroxide hypothesis. Copper is used to form one of the superoxide dismutases (SOD) that not only produce peroxides, but also break them down. It is possible therefore that a lack of copper-superoxide dismutase (cu-SOD) may also play a role in the graying process.
Getting back to catalase specifically, it is an iron based enzyme, so iron will help in its formation. Although people need to be careful when using iron as it is too easy to overboard with it. And in excess it can promote tissue damage.
An easier way that should work is to increase the flora with probiotics and prebiotics as these bacteria also produce catalase, which should absorb through the mucous membranes.
