this has been the group ive been looking for! i have been doing things to research on memory. i am a 25 yr old woman, have been having a memory prob for a long time. i will give some background about my memory. when i was a child, a small child like 5 yrs old, my memory wasn't the best.
my own teachers (k-12 and in college) have told me that i am not concentrating hard enough, that taking tests my grades were ok to bad, but taking elective courses was a piece of cake for me, that when it comes to reciting it was hard for me comprehend what im reading and rewording it back to my teachers or in my assignments, etc. the strange thing is i had no problems memorizing phone numbers and email addresses, but i couldnt recite anything in a textbook maybe 14-20% of it.
in school, i was training myself to memorize. i would read something out loud then recite what i heard and i would some of it right. i used to use flash cards quite a bit and still ended up flunking tests. i was told those werent working for me. as a child, i suffer from emotional trauma of being degraded and humiliated by my parents constant yelling screaming etc to the point i dont remember much about the past.
nobody helped me in school, teachers were concern about their paychecks. in college, we didnt have a medical center for the students to get tested or get medical help. i have ZERO money to even see what problems i am having mental wise. my own parents never really helped me with school, i struggled a lot and still do.
its hard for me to learn something and i end up not remembering it at all. doing studying never worked or lasted because i couldnt remember what i read anyway. the problem i am having is if place something on a table and i am now starting to run around trying to find my keys, papers, or whatever it is when it is right there in front of me.
teachers have told me i am too slow when it comes to doing things using my motor skills. i really dont know what to do, what can i do with no money and a job when a job is scarce these days? this memory prob is killing me and i dont know how to fix it.
i am wondering what strategies has everyone has done and worked for them for improving their memory? how did u notice any improvements?
