Getting Ready to Plant

In the spring I would go to visit my Grandfather. By the time I had gotten there he had already begun the process of getting the garden soil ready. Grandfather took me to the garden and showed me the garden space. He had me take off my shoes and socks and we walked around the garden. He would sing a song to the soil.

He had me sing my own "made up" song to the soil. The song said how much we loved the soil and how much we appreciated it. The song said we would do our best to take care of the things planted there.

Then we went to the barn where the seeds were waiting. He had me take seeds for the corn and had each of us take a hand full of seeds in our hands. Then he sang a song to the corn. He had me "make up" a song to the corn. He had me hold the seeds next to my heart, and had me send a lot of love to the seeds and close my eyes and imagine how the corn would look growing and how beautiful it would look and how great the ears of corn would be when it was ready to pick. He had me mix these seeds into the big container of corn seeds. This process was done for each of the varieties of seeds we were going to plant.

Then we went out into the field and started to plant. We would sing what he called growing songs for each of the varieties of seeds. When we were done planting the seeds, he had me stand in the middle of the garden and "imagine" how the garden would look when it was growing. He had me send lots of love to the garden. Then we could “see” the little plants coming up.

Each day we would go out to the garden and sing the growing song and send love to the soil, the seeds and the plants as they grew.

After the correct time, the little seeds started to grow into little plants. That was always a happy time! It was exciting to see the little plants coming up! Naturally we watered and continued to sing to the garden.

In the right time, the corn, lettuce, tomatoes and other things were ready to eat. We would go through the garden to decide which things we needed for that day to eat. Then Grandfather would stand near the plants and ask which plants were ready for us to eat. He would say thank you to those plants for helping us to have food to eat. Then we would collect those that were ready and have them for our food.

The plants always seemed to do very well and our food always tasted so good!
