I hope the professor accepts my proposal. Anyone have any comments, or hopefully, good links other than skin deep? Thanks.
Inch by
inch review of Top Fashion Magazine: One month review of Glamour Magazine, its toxic cosmetic and fear based body-image content
Glamour Magazine is considered the fashion industry’s top magazine. They were the winner of the 2010 National Magazine Awards, beating out publications like The Smithsonian, Atlantic Monthly, and other periodicals with higher standards of literary content. Glamour’s verified circulation is approximately 2.3MM in numerous countries, not including website hits. The cosmetic industry is very loosely regulated by the Federal, Drug and Trade Commission. Presently the cosmetic industry is not required to list their ingredients. A new bill, H.R. 5786, would require chemical transparency, but is expected to die in congress due to the economy, and fierce opposition from the industry.
I propose to take one issue of Glamour and provide percentages of content (based on inches) of both the toxic chemical content of products promoted with the use of MSDS sheets and other valid sources, as well as the percentage of fear based body image content, within both articles and advertisements. I believe that the entire publication promotes unhealthy practices targeted toward women, in both editorial and advertising content.
