Hi, I have had a migraine for 4 1/2 months along with muscle twitches and random spasms and tingling down one half of my face. I have been seeing flashing lights almost all day every day even with my eyes shut and even in the dark I felt like someone was shining a light into my eyes. I struggle with day light and bright lights and have been feeling dizzy and sick all the time. so many different pain meds I have tried. All sorts of over the counter meds, forehead sticks, cold compresses and cool patches, many different types of migriane pills, I tried taking nothing for a few weeks to make sure the meds weren't causing it but it didn't work. I tried rizatriptan but had a nasty reaction I also take anti inflamatorys, tramadol and I was on beta blockers for a month as they can prevent migraines.
But the problem was is that this was one long migraine and was litterally ruining my life. Tramadol and nurofen with codine were the only 2 things that helped with the pain but the lights still flashed even after taking them and I have also been seeing visual snow for 3 weeks and occasional sparkles. But then 5 days ago I started taking gabapentin not really expecting it to work but the migraine has just stopped! At 1st the lights were just less frequent but I havent seen them at all today. I can think clearly for the 1st time in months. I am still getting headache but a mild form and I still get sick and dizzy but no more flashing lights!
so how did it do it? one 300mg pill a day of gabapentin. How did it stop my migraine when nothing else could? Also it has helped my various strange goings on with my muscles as well.
ps: I also have Chronic-Fatigue-Syndrome & fibromyalgia but not sure if the migraine is conected with it as I have experienced many migraines and headaches over the years but nothing has ever felt the way this has. Oh and I have added epilepsy forum to the ones this is posted on because I know this is an epilepsy pill but I dont have epilepsy.

As you may know, gabapentin and its prescription cognates are simply a restricted access and usually more expensive form of GABA, Gamma Aminobutryic Acid, one of many amino acids available as an OTC supplement. As such its most basic function is to down-regulate the nervous system. Think of it as a sea anchor to slow things down a bit, or in higher doses, an emergency brake.
Your symptom set is very like that of folks with chemical sensitivities who have been exposed to toxic chems that act as sources of overstimuation. It is also similar to those of some with bipolar disorder aka manic depression. I have experienced such things in those contexts more than once, and personally know others who have done so. GABA and other calming amino acids help in those cases as well. Both GABA and gabapentin are also effective in many cases of epilepsy, which is also an over-stimualation of the nervous system. Since this treatment has worked for you, overstimulation of your nervous system may be the reason for your symptoms, rather than the more commonly thought restriction of circulation. Poissibly, both were involved.
It is wonderful that you have found relief, and I am very glad for you. Now, it might be wise to look at the underlying causes of the problem and do some well-targeted lifestyle changes to avoid future problems of a similar nature. Dysregulation in any body system is often a case of shortage of or imbalances in alkaline minerals.

i thanks for your answer. I had a virus in april could that have caused an over stimulation of the nervous system?
Also my air con was leaking coolant in june and I had it disconnected. Maybe that was the cause? The headaches started about the middle of june and became worse and worse until it was constant.
I dont have any psycological disorders but am considering getting some counceling because the pain (not just there but fibro pain as well) is getting me down. I wouldn't say its Depression but I have been emotional over the last few weeks. I dont have bi polar disorder or anxiety. I know what anxiety does to you as my mum has it. I dont think I would have the energy to be anxious. Most of the time I am pretty relaxed when I am not in pain. I dont know where to look to think about lifestyle changes because everything was perfect before all this began. I was happy with my weight, have 2 great kids, work was going well and even my finances are ok. I dont drink, smoke or take drugs and my only vices are chocolate and diet coke (both of this I cut out for a while in an attempt to stop the migraine)
I'm at a loss as to why all of this began if not anything to do with cfs/fibro. I had 4 years clear of cfs and it started coming back in feb but I was handling it well until the headaches started.
Is it possible it could be a form of epilepsy as I have occasional absences, memory loss, had fainted at work once, had a "shaking episode" like a fit which was put down to a reaction to meds and I get random twitching and spasms. This has decreased a lot since taking the gabapentin. I really really dont want it to be some kind of epilepsy as I would be devestated to lose my licence but it has just occured to me in the last few days that maybe my twitches and absences and migraine are all connected.

Are you absolutely sure the leakage was stopped, and you have not been having continued exposure to it??
You speak of having young children and of having 4 years free of CFS/fibro symptoms. Do you know there is a major school of opinion that states these are chronic cyclical and gradually worsening conditions??? When one is younger, they can seem to disappear entirely, but typically DO come back. Eventually, many just fluctuate in severity of symptoms without any time entirely free from them. The older one is and the longer one has had them, the more likely this chronic/cyclical outcome is. I wish that this info had been available when I was much younger. Would have been much more careful with many lifestyle choices if I had not mistakenly though that I was entirely "cured" several times and gone back to old habit that were causative.
The epileptic-like stuff can be caused by chemical and biological agents. For me, has been pesticides and molds. In my case, standard tests for epilepsy have not shown the typical results for a positive diagnosis, but I have had the symptoms off and on in response to the toxins just mentioned for many years.
If many of the neurological symptoms are arising at work, your work environment may be toxic for you due to chemicals, molds or other biological entities in the HVAC system, etc. While it is entirely possible that you would be the only one so affected, it is more likely that others are also having problems if your workspace has sick building syndrome.
Anyway, that is a lot to try to take in, so will sign off now. May your search for wise health choices be blessed with success.

When Wobble mentioned "diet-coke" I remembered a post about how the Aspartame in diet-cokes causes migranes and a lot of other maladies, being a neurotoxin.

This is a reply to # 1,716,438I tried Imitrex and propanolol all to no avail and then tried gabapentin (Neurontin) 300mg a night. It helped with my sleep and more importantly helped with migraines. I haven't had a migraine for three months now and this medicine has helped me so much. Definitely worth it. if anyone's interested this is reliable site where I buy my pills.
