Several days ago I received an email from a Cure Zone member inquiring about a recent post I had made recommending soapsuds enemas. She referenced an earlier posting I had made several years ago where I had taken an opposite position, and had recommended against the SSE and using only salt solution for cleansing enemas.
It was a legitimate question and I feel I owe an explanation to the entire Cure Zone community for the reasons behind my changing positions.
My reply follows, with several updates:
Hi, yes I wrote that following a very convincing argument by a passionate Cure Zone follower who managed to lead me to believe that frequent soapsuds enemas could eventually result in causing colon cancer.
Since childhood I have struggled with a lazy bowel and had received soapsuds enemas at home and continued to use them as needed as an adult. So I was very concerned when confronted with the possibility that something I had been using myself and recommending to clients could result in such a devastating disease.
However, after several years of discussing her theory with numerous physicians, naturopaths, nurses and other practitioners of colon hydrotherapy, I could find no corroborating evidence of any such connection between soapsuds enemas and colon cancer, even among people who had used daily soapsuds enemas for decades,
In fact soapsuds enemas have been safely used in pediatrics with children of all ages, during pregnancy, and in geriatric care with no evidence of any connection to increased cancer risk.
And in my own practice, where I often have to relieve fecal impactions, I found salt solution enemas far less effective than soapsuds, often requiring larger volumes and more repetitions to achieve success.
The final convincing event was when I became constipated myself for several days on vacation last year and took salt
water enemas two nights in a row that completely failed to achieve satisfactory results. The next morning I tried again and took my first soapsuds enema in several years with complete success and welcome relief.
I'm so sorry for confusing you, but in the process I've learned a good lesson. The soapsuds enema has been time tested in the home and used in hospitals millions of times for well over a century, and has been proven safe and effective beyond any doubt.
If anyone would like additional information regarding my earlier postings or the source information I used to stop using and recommending soapsuds enemas I will be happy to provide them.
Mea Culpa, Mea Culpa, sincerely,
Valerie
