Dr. Mom,
Hi there! My son is 6 1/2 months and has been on solids for about a month now. During this time he has only had Avacado, Banannas, Sweet Potatoes, Pears, Peaches, Prunes, Carrotts, Apples and Squash. I have given him most of the fruits Raw and pureed but the veggies have steamed lightly and pureed. He gets a rash around his mouth immediately when eating just about Anything but ESPECIALLY the fruits. Is this so me sort of Allergic Reaction or a natural reaction due to the acid in the food, etc?
The Eczema on his forehead did go away but suddenly came back with a vengence in the last week and trying to spread. I have not started him on any oils yet but am wandering if I should just give him flax seed oil in his bottle or Udo's mixed oils. How much daily?

This is a reply to # 1,668,470I would not consider a mild rash around the mouth to be an allergic reaction. Babies do a lot of drooling and they tend to get as much food on the outside of their mouth as they do on the inside, so it is probably a reaction to the digestive juices in the saliva. As far as the eczema goes, I used straight flax oil in Allie's bottles. I would probably start with 1/2 Tbsp and see how the baby reacts to it. If it causes diarrhea, then you will need to start slower and allow the body to adjust to the additional oil in the diet.

Baby has been getting about 1/4 teaspoon of organic, high lignan flaxseed oil in one bottle once daily. He did have loose stools at first but is adjusting. I will keep adding more and more until we are worked up to one tablespoon a day. Should I spread that out over the day or all in one bottle? Baby is supplementing with goats milk now as my milk as dwindled down.

MoreThis is a reply to # 1,672,728I put some in each bottle I gave her, but watch the eczema to see what it takes to clear it up. He probably won't need nearly as much as Allie did because your diet is much better than the starvation diet her birth mother was surviving on.

Thanks! I will be increasing it slowly until he is up to a tablespoon. It's frustrating to know he's struggling with this eczema despite my great diet, supplements,etc. It almost seems unfair but then I think about all the other babies around the world in worser circumstances and it changes my attitude. I just have a perfectionists attitude and want the best for my children. How long did it take before you saw it helping her? Did she have it all over her body?

This is a reply to # 1,678,124Yes, she had it all over, with the worse being on her arms and legs. It doesn't take long to see results - as the body receives what it needs, it will immediately begin to make adjustments. The body is always seeking homeostasis (balance) and will use whatever it is given to try to bring this about.
