Hello all. My daughter was recently diagnosed with Usher Syndrome Type 2 which is a congenital disease which affects both hearing and sight. Patients with Usher Type 2 are born with moderate to severe hearing loss and then begin to also lose their eyesight due to a retinal condition called retinitis pigmentosa. Although significant research has been done using genetic replacement therapies as well as stem cell therapies which hold promise, their is currently no cure for either Usher Syndrome or Retinitis Pigmentosa.
My daughter, who is 15, has adjusted well at this point in her life to her hearing loss and wears hearing aids and does great in regular school classes, socially, sports, etc. But, now, the retinitis pigmentosa side of this disease has started to show up and the vision problems and prognosis for the future are much more scary to her on the vision loss side.
Although this is not a cure, a doctor who specializes in RP examined my daughter and recommended a daily supplement of vitamins including 25,000 IU Beta Carotine, 800 IU Viamin E, 1000 mg Vitamin C, 20 mg Lutein and 1200 mg DHA.
The problem that I'm having is that these are all redaily available in the high doses prescribed here except, it seems, the DHA. It is impossible for me to find DHA supplements that don't require her to take 5 or 6 pills a day just to get the DHA, plus all the pills for the other supplements.
Does anyone know of a 600mg or higher DHA supplement that is available on the market where my daughter could take 2 a day and get what she needs?
Thanks for any help that you can provide.
