I had my Mirena in for 5 years and didn't have any real complaints. I gained a TON of weight but cannot blame it entirely on Mirena. I also lost all sex drive but overall it was fine.
I'm going get very detailed in hopes that it helps.
Has anyone had trouble with their cycles after Mirena and had it resolve itself in less than a year without help?
And unless I hear that its happened, how do I convince my doctor to do something about it now instead of breaking my heart for the next year?
My husband and I wanted to start trying to concieve this September and I'd heard so many stories about getting pregnant right away after Mirena that I decided to remove it that month.
It has been 112 days now and things are not normal. I spotted a little after removal which is normal and spotted again 35 days after removal. I started spotting again 43 days later and went to the doctor on day 47 thinking I was pregnant. A little side story, they told me I had a positive pregnancy test, sent me off to get blood work and scheduled my first pre-natal. I got a phone call 2 hours later telling me they mixed up my urine with someone else's, never even tested mine until they realized it was still sitting there and I wasn't pregnant. The blood test confirmed that I was not pregnant.
This was helpful because I had a very heavy bleed that might have been thought to be a miscarriage but we know it wasn't.
I had a very very heavy, long period with lots of clots, my doctor prescribed me provera to stop the bleeding at 13 days. It took 5 days to taper off and stop, then the provera caused another bleed which came back just as heavy and stayed heavy for 10 days finally ending on day 13 of that bleed.
I've been charting my temperature since that first period started and have not seen any ovulation. I'm on day 49 of this cycle (counting from the day the provera bleed started). I have an appointment with my doctor on the 7th. Its my first appt with this doctor as my last one I'd only seen 3 times about the heavy bleed and he was always busy and wasn't concerned about my ovulation. He wanted me to wait a 'few' cycles but here at 112 days I've had 1 cycle, I don't think I can wait months longer.
I've asked on a lot of message boards and the only people who had trouble ovulating after Mirena had to have a doctor intervene. One woman's doctor intervened at 5 months, 2 other women had a doctor intervene at 1 year, and one woman has been 2 years without her cycle being normal and ovulating. One woman was ovulating but her progesterone levels were not rising enough to sustain a pregnancy and she is on progesterone supplements in her current pregnancy to keep it.
I'm extra upset because I expected to get pregnant or at least be able to get pregnant right away... when they removed it they assured me I was totally fertile as soon as that thing was out. Only when you start to have problems do they admit that 'some' women had trouble with fertility afterwards. I was regular as clockwork before this. The weight gain may have caused some of these issues but I've never been able to lose weight without really extreme measures and any extreme attempts at weight loss will hurt my fertility also.
I don't want more drugs in my system if my system will fix itself but more and more I'm finding that if it hasn't fixed itself by now, I'm looking at year before my doctor will try anything and thats not ok with me.. I would have removed this after my honeymoon in preparation for trying for a baby in September if I had known this would happen.
