Hi lightstream,
Usually a coffee enema is taken as a retention enema to clean the liver. It is most effective if it is retained in the rectum and the sigmoid flexure areas.
One would take from 1 cup to 4 cups of coffee enema and retain it for 15 to 20 minutes. Usually more than 4 cups gets very hard to retain.
As in your case, you are trying to get the coffee enema in the ascending column of the colon. This is not considered a retention enema. It is more like a cleansing enema and the most common solutions used for this purpose are saline solution, baking soda solution, soapsuds solution and if you feel you must have coffee in your cleansing enema consider the Mae West enema. This is described in Curezone bowel cleansing section.
