In my opinion, the key to understanding what you're tinnitus - which is a symptom of any number of often minor but potentially serious health problems as I understand it - is trying to tell you, is take your whole body's health into consideration.
For example, you say you have allergies. Well, did you know that allergy symptom of clogged, inflamed sinuses (and sinus infections) is scientifically proven to effect the blood-flow to and function of the inner-ear, which often leads to tinnitus.
Also note that hundreds of prescription and non-prescription medications are known to cause tinnitus (inlcuding Aspirin and Advil), as are food additives, such as neuro/excito-toxins like MSG. And in many cases, it's what a sufferer is not eating - since they eat from the not only genetically engineered and poisoned but nutrient-robbed modern-day food supply - such as B vitamins, zinc and selenium, which is causing an inner-ear environment that is conducive to tinnitus (or caused you to sustain an injury to the inner-ear due to noise or an accident.)
There are many contributing factors (almost none of which you'll likely hear about from your ENT, considering that he or she has been trained by the pharmaceutical company founded modern medical establishment to keep "treating" instead of once healing) and the good news is that most of them can be eliminated by simply eliminating certain aspects of your day-to-day lifestyle.
