Hemorrhoids can occur inside of outside of the anal canal and are the result of vein dilation...much like varicose veins. Symptoms include pain, burning, itching, swelling and possible bleeding. Surgery may be necessary to repair the damaged tissue in more extreme cases.
There are numerous causes of hemorrhoids...vein weakness, constipation, diarrhea, pregnancy, prolonged standing or sitting, heavy lifting, and vitamin deficiencies...particularly B vitamins. Hemorrhoids are very common and rarely occur in cultures where the diet consists of high-fiber, unrefined foods.
Straining is a common cause of hemorrhoids since it increases the abdominal pressure and restricts blood flow through the veins which weakens them. Sufficient fiber and water intake promote regular bowel movements and eliminate the need for straining. Defecating in a squating position also assists in proper elimination.
When hemorrhoids are present warm sitz baths or compresses...such as witch hazel...are helpful, along with supplementing fiber and increasing water intake. Supplements which strengthen veins may also be beneficial....bioflavonoids, glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), hydroxyethylrutosides (HERs). Herbs such as neem, barberry and nagkesar have also been found to provide relief...Pilex is a patented herbal supplement that contains these herbs.
*Although I have yet to verify this...I have read that Preparation H contains mercury...and obviously should be avoided!
