Last year I used
Miracle-Mineral-Supplement to get my UC into remission which worked well. Since then I have learnt not everyone who has tried this gets the same results, though they may get some health improvements. One problem is that
Miracle-Mineral-Supplement is quite harsh and unless your colitis is already reasonably under control it may make it worse if you take too much.
Then there are some questions about the safety of
Miracle-Mineral-Supplement if used longer term and it's effect on bowel flora
The alternative I believe can be equally effective and maybe even more so than MMS is iodide, either potassium iodide(
SSKI ) or
Lugols (10%
KI 5% I2) reduced with vitamin C so it is all iodide. I have recently taken up to 10ml of the reduced
Lugols with no adverse effects except a darkening of urine.
The reason I believe
Iodide can be used to treat UC is due to my own use of it and further improvement since starting it over a year ago, I still had some IBS type symptoms after MMS though no bleeding and normal frequency.
Lugol's use improved this further.
I only took a small amount to begin with then switched to
Iodide only with increasing amounts. I know Amato previously tried 300mg in the form of
Lugol's without success, and I believe this aggravates colitis as it is too oxidative
Reduced
Lugols in the right amount or potassium
Iodide on the other hand, is not irritating in effective amounts. it does not need to be in an oxidative form to be effective.
This article on uses of
Potassium Iodide to treat skin diseases is another reason I believe Iodide to be effective against IBD
http://dermnetnz.org/treatments/potassium-iodide.html
'It is not clear how
Potassium Iodide works in the treatment of dermatological conditions but it may be because of its effect on neutrophils. Neutrophils are a type of white blood cell, important in the immune system's fight against bacteria.
Potassium iodide appears to be particularly effective in conditions where neutrophils predominate in the early stages of the disease. Its activity against fungi is possibly because it kills the fungi directly or by enhancement of the body's immunologic and non-immunologic defence mechanisms.
The effectiveness of
Potassium Iodide in the treatment of dermatological diseases has been shown in a number of studies'
If you click on the skin diseases listed in this document you will see something interesting.
Two of these inflammatory and ulcerous skin diseases list ulcerative colitis as a cause and also immunedeficiency or autoimmunity
The dosage of Iodide to resolve these conditions is around 1 gram of potassium iodide daily for several months in some cases
One gram should be built up to gradually to avoid adverse reactions since
KI will mobilise bromine and mercury at higher doses, also selenomethionine needs to be taken along with the iodide and the more iodide the more Se, up to 800mcg, partly to deal with mercury. also buffered vitamin c up to 3g ( I use ascorbic acid powder and bicarb of soda). I also believe boron should be taken, at least 3mg, and more would be a good idea. Also vitamin D3 5000 to 10,000ius, the more with less sun exposure
Since there are possible problems with high bromide levels the dose is best built up gradually but a minimal dose is needed to clear bromine and higher doses do this better.
Also those with thyroid problems and kidney disease should be cautious, for further info on all this check out the
Iodine forum.
How does it work? Iodide is effective against many pathogens. It is an antioxidant and oxidant when converted to
Iodine and is used by and boosts the immune system.
What's more
KI gets into mucous secretions so in this way it can get directly to the colon, which is of course a mucous membrane, and may directly deal with any infection of the damaged colon.
IBD sufferers have also been found to be deficient in iodine
I've not found any info on the treatment of IBD with iodide yet but the medical profession sadly ignores things like this in favour of keeping us dependant on drugs which often only weaken the immune system further and offer no real cure. I see no reason not to try this method along with a inflammation reducing diet and suitable supplementation
Iodide is very non toxic itself and essential to the body unlike MMS and synthetic drugs
