The past five years I've learned things that blow my mind about the world we live in. What got me started is Modern medicines attitude towards Disease. Here we have all these Diseases, (modern man is the sickest we've been for a long time) and I rarely hear if ever why?
The answer is so simple it's ridiculous: The amounts of pollutants our bodies are handling is astronomical. (Tailpipe emmisions, -Diesel is extremely toxic, houshould cleaning solutions, fumes from our Laundry soaps...the list goes on.)
It continues, things are not what they seem.
From Wired magazine: researchers and biotech companies are quietly developing pharmaceuticals that are decidedly good for brains, bowels, blood vessels and even immune systems -- and they're inspired by tobacco's deadly active ingredient: nicotine., http://www.wired.com/science/discoveries/news/2007/06/nicotine

Could this be why Tobacco use must be elimanted, to guarantee big Pharma's profits?
Regarding Indians historically, they actually did use it every day.
"Smoking was chiefly done after the evening meal, in the sweathouse, before going to sleep. It was a social ritual, and the pipes were passed around the group.
A man never let his pipe out of his sight. Occasionally he would stop for a smoke when on a journey or when meeting someone on the trail."
Early Uses of California Plants By Edward K. Balls University of California Press.
What I find fascinating is how much they used it medicinally. California Indian tribes would smoke it as soon as they felt a cold coming on.
In my travels to South American countries, you always see in the local market, merchants with tables full of Medicinal herbs for a vast variety of ailments costing pennies on the dollar.
The Biotech/Pharmarceudical industry in the U.S. has hijacked this important knowledge and claimed it for themselves for profit.
They attack any form of spreading of knowledge of how powerful and affordable Medicinal plants and herbs are, even though that is the basis for their synthesized products.
And of course we all know about Codex Alimentarius and the W.H.O/W.T.O.
For those on here who don't know, "Codex is an annual World Health Organisation (WHO) sponsored gathering of delegates in Europe, many of them CFR Transnationals pharmaceutical corporations.
This WHO/WTO joint effort called CODEX is in the process of wiping out local supplement companies and natural health care practices, to bring in more drug based medicines, in what is euphemistically known as "creating a level playing field", while primarily giving the public a misleading impression that someone in the World Health Organisation (WTO) is looking after its health and safety."
Of course I'm in full agreement with the present misuse by modern man of tobacco. It was never meant to have additives added or be grown with pesticides. It was never meant to be smoked 40 times a day, as some addictive-type-personalties do. The fault is with them.
What's needed is Education about it, not simply throwing this Ancient and Spiritual tradition away forever.
There's a reason Shamans in Central America smoked it. Used the right way, it brings one closer to the earth and non-earthly happenings. Used the right way, it brings a relaxation and healing of the body.
As does another powerful medicinal plant, Cannabis, as you pointed out.
