Because this website goes around the world, I would like to state that I do not understand why my country seems to be so intent on going to war against Iraq. I would like to hear your ideas.
I hear it's really all about oil. What do you think? Or is it all about nuclear weapons and the threat of humans being exposed to biochemicals?
My country seems to have placed 9-11 in the background and it seems to view Bin Laden as not as important as Iraq. What do you think?
Is my President thinking or not thinking? I voted for him and have always had great respect for him. I would just like your opinion.

What kind of threat are we talking about?! Iraq and its leader are really nothing for America to be afraid of!
And if it is just about the wrong leader why do the poor Iraqi civilians have to suffer? (To your information they adore their existing leader.)
It is easy to get convinced by the media who shows only bad things about Iraq.
I have been there and have seen all the pain and misery that poor civilians had to leave with during these terrible 10 years of sanctions. I was terrified hearing the reports about bombings in Baghdad happenig every week.
On February 19th, 2001 (quite a time before 9.11!) I was there when they (British and American forces)send about 27 airplanes to bomb Baghdad.
It was Friday evening 9 o'clock, for muslims it is like Saturday night for us, families went out for a walk and to do some shopping in one of the most popular street there called Al Mansour.
Me and my colleagues were having dinner in our appartment, only 15 minutes walk from that main street. And then it was that terrible alarm sound everywhere and a lot of shooting in the sky. We thought it was some training and did not pay too much attention to it. We just went on the roof of our building to see what was going on. (I would not do the same thing now). The sky was all enlighted by shooting from anti-aircraft units.
The next morning we watched the report on TV. In addition to "regular preventive" bombing on the north of Baghdad, they droped a couple of bombs right on the main Al Mansour street! It is VERY FAR from any military objects, by the way! They were casualties, several people died including small children!!!
How many of you Americans knew about this "little incident"?
What if the bomb, for example, hit our building and my mother in Russia would never hear from her beautiful 24 years old daughter again? (None of us is any more special then those who live there!)
What does it have to do with any weapons of mass distruction (which are not even proved to exist there at all)? In which way these actions suppose to prevent any possible threat of the United States? I don't understand.
All I understand is that Iraq is a very important strategical point and is a very reach peace of land that America would like to controll and posess.
Let's then not disturb air anymore calling aggression all these nice new names!

I ran for congress this year as a third party candidate and was trying to give the voters a choice of someone who opposed the war. I marched in an anti war rally and during a debate made sure the people in the audience understood my opposition. My "Repulicrat" opponents said that they had faith that George had a smoking gun. George has since said he does not need a smoking gun
This experience taught me a lot. We Americans are good hearted, but we are huge hyporcrits. Our country is unfortunately run by those who buy our politicians off by giving campaign funds, and our polticians (no offense paulette, But George Bush is the worse) spend all their time trying to pay back those that gave to their campaigns.
Our politicians now control the media. Rusfox, you are 100% correct. Americans have no idea of the atrosities we are commiting around the world to other countrys. We just don't believe we are capable. If you read the book, "how washington really works" the first chapter deals with how politicians control the media. What happens is that the reporters that cover congress and the president, get all the perks of politicians. The get to go golfing, eat with them, special parking and such. If a reporter writes a bad story about the president, then that reporter will not be allowed back. Since this reporter is no longer allowed in the whitehouse or in congress, the paper they work for fires them. The news stories we are getting now are worthless.
The U.S has some of the worst human rights violations in our own country. Who are we to judge Iraq?

Paulette, I don't mean to question you politically, I'm glad that you care. Please pay attention and I think you will be sickened. I voted for george too and that gives me nightmares that I was so blind, but our choices were so bad.

I can't pay a whole lot of attention to politics because it drives me crazy. But I, too, had heard about the weekly bombings of Iraq since 2000! (before 'bowling for columbine came out) And it seems like no American had! eiy eiy eiy. That's some bad manipulative stuff going on. You can't trust what any of them say and you certainly can't trust what's coming out in any of the newspapers.
Hey, just curious, was it 'big' news at all in the States when one of our (canadian) government officials called Bush a 'moron'? Just wondering...
We're creating our world...just look at what we're creating! We're going to get what we deserve...reap what we sow etc etc.
Quite a few months ago I had a dream (uh-oh!) where I time travelled back to 1982. (I'll skip the crazy details - how I realized I was in 1982...) Basically, when I realized it, I was excited because I could tell the guy I met a bunch of stuff that happens in the Future!! Then he could tell others and who knows what that would bring...? So, I explained that I was from 2002 (oooh it was weird I tell you) and when he asked what it was like...I explained (now, I'm not 'political' at all...so this was very weird to me - what I said) that in Florida there was a screw up with ballots and after much ado....this Bush man got in as President. Since then, I explained, it's been all about 'War'. The poor guys face as I told him this...I could read on his face that the year 2002 seemed SO futuristic and now that I was talking about War it just sounded like an awful place to be. I ended by saying...that although, everything is all about 'War' now, there is a large faction of people that are optimistic about the future and are working towards that.
hmmmmm. Seems like it's all about 'good and evil'...hopefully after this episode is over we'll all realize there IS no 'good and evil'...no duality...just Oneness! One energy, lifeforce. Seems like we're having a crisis here! Maybe we will grow once this is over...

Frankly, when posting my story about that bombing of Baghdad,I was a bit afraid that understanding we had in other forums could end up here.
I have a lot friends in the States and I do realise that the American government and American people, those who are able to analyse and have their own point of view, are two different institutions.
What really makes me upset is that we can not do anything about this situation and I am pretty sure that Bush will anyway do what he had planned long long time ago.
After I posted my Baghdad memories I checked internet typing "19.02.2001 Baghdad" to see what we have there. It was interesting to read those old news and Bush's comments. It seemed like deja vu with all those cliches and weapons of mass destruction's stuff. You can try it yourself.
Anyway, I hope for a miricle.
Hope is the last thing to die...

This is a reply to # 144,599To me the Moron comment was a little funny, but it was no big deal in the U.S. The big deal to me was that they fired the guy. What happened to freedom of speach? That brings up another point of how our bullying everyone has far reaching effects. Why would Canada be so afraid of us that they have to fire someone just because he made that comment.

I have impeckable liberal credentials. I protested in the 60's (both civil rights and the war) and have stood to most of "the causes" (except for the "blue darter" in some mountain stream somewhere). For the life of me, I don't get the confusion. We are under attack. After 9/11, I'm not sure what to make of peace protesting New Yorkers. It's is one thing to take a philosophical position, behind safe borders but it's quite another to see 3000 of your fellow Americans get killed.
We are not fighting for oil, or trying to snuff out Islam or engaging in international adventurism for political reasons or even doing the humanitarian thing (anyone remember the thanks we got for Somalia?). We are in the fight of our (recent) life; not only for our way-of-life, but for our very life.
I hope it ends quickly, but I hope the message get through; We will help anyone who needs and asks for it. But don't abuse us, for we will strike back.

This is a reply to # 145,312hey, i'm all for the freedom, but i want to get one thing straight - remember Osama Bin Laden? He's not the leader of Iraq. Saddam Hussein is, and Saddam & Bin Laden are about as chummy as Hitler and Mussolini were. So tell me again, why are we in Iraq? Quit referring back to an event caused by one person as the justification to invade the country of another. Just be honest - it's about the oil!

Question...why were firefighters silenced with a gag order for national security when they were trying to tell various media that they were convinced that what they saw was that a demolition occured and even they noticed plastic explosive residue.

Jet fuel will not burn at a temperature that will melt steel under normal conditions. However if there is a forced draught of air, the temperature of burning increases. I dont know what would happen in a collapsing building.

I believe it is for oil. US used Iraq to fight Iran, when Iraq decided not to dance to US tune anymore then the games started.
US does nothing about North Korea, those poor people are living through hell, in darkness and isolation.
US went into Iraq illegally, kills its citizens illegally, plans to steal its oil and cover up the real picture in warped media coverage.

America is the most powerful nation on earth and yes they like the prosperity that goes with oil but they are also the only nation in the world that is always ready and willing to step in when another country is in need of help! The American president has decided to fight the war on islamic soil rather than American soil. A lot of lives are being lost because of this but how many would die if these fanatical terrorists were given the opportunity to continue pounding at the United States?
These terrorist cells are everywhere and in my opinion
mostly here in Canada just waiting for orders. Bin Laden may still be at large but I doubt it, seems to me that it would be wiser to encourage his followers to believe he is still in hiding
This way the Americans can continue their war on Terrorism and keep the fanatics at bay while they try to figure out where their leader actually is. If Canada ever decides to get tough on our landed immigrant and refugee status(this one is ridiculous!) policies we will get backlash from these groups and then we'll be getting help from your country even though our government has been sitting on the fence and found it politcally safer not to take a stand.
