Hi everyone,
I am new to this site, and found it during my research of Mirena side effects. I had my Mirena inserted June 2008. It was an easy placement, I had no trouble with it until a month ago. After placement my period was normal, 28-days cycle; 5-6 days. Last month my period all of a sudden was very light, and only lasted 4 days. Then this month, I have had no period at all. Other things I have noticed are the following:
- weight gain of 10 lbs
- breast soreness and tenderness
- lactating recently
- cramping
- horrible mood swings and anxiety attacks
- insomnia
- lack of sex drive
Basically I am feeling like I am pregnant. Is this normal? I made a HUGE mistake of trusting my GYN when he suggested Mirena and I made an even bigger mistake when I didn't do proper research about it prior to insertion. Can someone please help me shed some light as to what I am feeling and if they are normal side effects?

Sorry to hear you're having problems. No one on this forum is surprised. Scan the posts here and you'll find you're not alone with all your side effects. It's expected that your periods would get lighter and possibly disappear altogether. I'm not sure what you mean by "lactating recently". Are you currently breastfeeding? You should be aware that the artificial hormone in the Mirena does become systemic and is found in women's breast milk. If you're breastfeeding, your baby is getting small doses of the artificial hormone, progestin. Educate yourself as much as possible so you can decide if it would be best for you to have it removed.

This is a reply to # 1,406,720No I am not currently breastfeeding. I had my daughter 14 months ago, but couldn't breastfeed her. I did take a pregnancy test yesterday and it came out negative. I have been reading a lot about the side effects of Mirena, and I am terrified that I have this inside my body.

This is a reply to # 1,406,587Please don't blame yourself. I think we are all just victims of this IUD. We were raised as kids to trust that Drs. know everything. I wonder if they are underinformed about this thing as well. Too many have said their Drs. deny the side effects that they are having are due to the Mirena. My Dr. said there were'nt any side effects and I believed her. My only concern was if it had latex in it as I am allergic to it. I wonder if silicone could be an issue too. I have had an IUD in for 6 yrs. and never realized the symptoms I had were related. I thought I was starting menopause at 41! Duh. I had it out 16 days ago (before finding this site) and boy am I glad that I did. I hope everyone seeking normalcy will have it soon. It's a good start reading the posts on this site. This is a reply to # 1,408,087You are definently not alone in your symptoms! I have had all of the same including the lactating and feelings as if I was pregnant. twice I was conviced that I was and had to have a blood test to prove that I was not! It has caused severe issues with me and now even more so that I'm having trouble having it removed. Do your research and decided if you want to have it removed, but no one here would blame you if you did. I just don't think it's the miracle contraceptive that Dr's claim it to be. I too wish I would have done more research before having it put in! I has been a nightmare for me that I'm still trying to overcome. I say the best thing to do is go with your gut and listen to what your body is telling you! I wish I would have done that! Good luck to you!
