Very curious what you may find out. I have symptoms much like your own and I am baffled. I have had a chronic problem with stuffiness and mucus which appears to be centered above my uvula. This congestion is likely related to my post-nasal drip, and perhaps even to my exaggerated gag reflex and/or my history of sinus polyps. On occasion I see a spot or two of blood in the sputum, once even a small-sized clot-like piece of blood, but this could all easily be from my frequently dry nasal passages.
Like you, my recent difficulty in fixing short-term memories, or in sometimes bringing a word to mind, is very disturbing. For most of my life I have enjoyed an exceptionally sharp memory. However, my doctor attributes these problems with concentration and memory entirely to my severe sleep apnea. I just had the surgery for the apnea 10 weeks ago, recovery from which is slow and arduous, but I haven't found the expected relief from memory problems.
So I have begun to wonder whether my sinus problems perhaps somehow compromise my amygdala, a part of the brain (next to the sinuses) critical to memory formation. Perhaps there is someone who can shed light on this possibility, though I know this possible connection may not yet be explored (the amygdala’s role in fixing memories has been known for only a short time). Anyway, much luck to you in finding a good treatment for your own memory issues. I know how disquieting such issues can be.
Like you, I really hope to find a usable answer, so I am guessing you may share my interest in the possible amgdala-sinus connection. I have not researched the literature on this as yet, so I can only offer you my speculation.
Your imbalance and stuffiness do suggest an active sinus problem. You may want to ask a doctor to check again on possible bacterial and/or fungal infections (do a culture?). On the other hand, as we age memory and concentration do slip a bit, and this is normal.
Also, both memory and concentration can be adversely affected by feeling unwell.
Depression and/or anxiety can exacerbate the problem, so try not to let the problem get worse by dwelling on it and becoming either anxious or depressed. I know I have to watch out for both when I am feeling especially frustrated.... Good luck!
