This is my first post at CureZone (please don't tell my wife I signed up for another internet forum!). I have an acquaintance on an investment forum who recently completed a 31-day water fast. He pointed me this way for more information.
I'm 33 years old (male), married with 4 daughters (6, 5, 2, 9 mos.), 5' 9" and 230
pounds (BMI 34 -- if you trust those things). About 2.5 years ago I had a business partner who cared enough about my health to urge me to borrow his "Natural Cures" audio CDs (
Kevin Trudeau ). I was 30 years old and wandering aimlessly through a sea of fad diets/exercise programs. I had absolutely no health "philosophy" up to that point. Although Trudeau is not perfect, I appreciate the fact that he introduced me to the plain truth that most of what is done in the medical industry is done for $$$. He also brought together the corpus of natural health data, and I have been able to further research each of these facts to draw my own conslusions.
Over the last couple years we have really cleaned up our diet and seriously reduced our exposure to environmental toxins -- but we are not perfect. In fact, we've had some highs and some lows -- some times when we were super careful (and felt great) and other times (like holidays) when we threw everything out the window.
A year ago Thanksgiving (2007) I had become quite sick with tonsilitis -- to the point of nearly needing to have them removed. Faced with the prospect of an "ectomy" or an anti-biotic (pen.) I chose the anti-biotic even though I had sworn off medications. After 7 days on the anti-biotic I was still struggling, but eventually the blisters on my tonsils subsided, and I still have them today (thankfully). However, the anti-biotic caused me to have a candidiasis rash outbreak that took 3 months to treat (LifeForce plan - Jeff McCombs).
It was that time one year ago when I finally decided I HAD TO take my health seriously. I didn't make any drastic changes, but just tried to make better choices along the way. At the time I was 255
pounds and all of my clothes were uncomfortably tight. Since then I have dropped 25
pounds and i have had to punch two new holes in my leather belt. I know 25 pounds is not a lot for a year when you are my size, but coming off Thanksgiving and Christmas I am please with the discipline I've achieved over the last year.
The problem? I'm still not healthy. I know that my body is full of toxic sludge from 30 years of living without a clue regarding proper nutrition. My weight lost plateaued many months ago, and, from what I understand, this can be due to the body resisting the release of fat-encapsulated toxins. I need to push through -- I need to be cleansed from the inside out -- I need a fresh start. Both of my parents are grossly overweight and they are CONSTANTLY ill. I see their lives as a bright warning flag to me. I don't want to share that fate.
I'll get to the point. I'm going to do a total water fast. I'm going to drive it to the end -- until hunger returns. My wife is still nursing our littlest (9 mos.), and she would like to join me, so we will wait to start until later in January when she is weaned. We are planning on eating only raw fruits/vegetables for 5 days followed by two days of fruit juice (organic -- juiced at home) immediately preceeding the fast.
Although my primary goal is to renew my health, I see this as a strongly spiritual event. It is a time to face my fear -- not that I'm afraid of the fast, but I'm afraid to face my own lack of self-discipline. A long time ago I tried a juice fast (remember the "Hollywood Diet" from circa 2000?) and caved at 10:30 p.m. the first night. (My wife has reminded me of this several times.) I believe my former failure was a result of not having a clearly defined philosophy/purpose/goal. I have that now, and I believe it will be my anchor through the first few days of food withdrawal.
Additionally, I am a Christian -- a TRUE Christian in that I truly seek to emulate Jesus Christ in every aspect of my life -- and I want this time of fasting to be a time of prayerful meditation. I want to emerge from the fast on a "higher plain" (enlightenment, if you will). Because of this I will be studying the Biblical significance of fasting over the next couple weeks in preparation. My wife and I are also planning on claiming one petition each for the duration of the fast whereby we will put ourselves at God's mercy and expect a miraculous intervention. At this point all of my ideas for this petition seem too insignificant for the magnitude of this event.
Jesus, immediately upon being revealed publicly at His baptism, went away into the wilderness and fasted 40 days. He was beginning a 3.5 year time of intense and physically demanding service to mankind, and this was His chosen method of preparation. BTW... it is interesting to note that the Scriptures say that "afterward he hungered", and at that moment of hunger following 40 days of fasting angels appeared to feed Him.
I am also preparing to make a life-changing transition (career change and cross-country move) at the end of Spring, and I feel that I need the strength of renewed health and focus to aid me in this transition. Otherwise I would be reluctant to attempt this fast in the winter. I have a feeling that this fast is going to be life-changing, and I am ready. I need the change.
I have a list of questions, and I would appreciate your answers based upon your knowledge and experience. Please refrain from giving opinions. If possible provide a source for your claims.
1. Is it necessary or advisable to take minerals/vitamins during a water fast? I currently daily take a quality multi-vitamin, a fish oil omega-3, 1,000 IU of D3, and a probiotic.
2. Starting Monday we will beging to transition our diet in preparation. What kinds of foods would you recommend (realistic, not ideal -- we do have 4 kids)? Also what other types of physical preparations / cleanses should we complete so that the fast is effective and tolerable?
3. I am really concerned about the refeeding process. We are not vegetarion nor do we plan on being vegetarian. Can anyone provide a reasonable 4-6 week schedule for the reintroduction of food?
4. At what point following a fast would you begin cardio / strength training?
5. How do you deal with social matters while fasting? (declining food, bad breath, prying questions, etc.)
6. How often should a total
Water Fast (30+ days) be completed for optimal well-being? I notice that Jesus only did it once in the 3.5 years before he was murdered. Is annual too often? Or is it only necessary to do occasional maintenance fasts of 7-10 days?
Thanks in advance for all of your help and support! (I have already learned a lot by reading Chrisb1's posts!) I plan on journaling the entire process in this thread.
